Subject: Assam Floods - UNDMT Sit Rep No. 1
Importance: High
Dear All,
On 1 July, very heavy rainfall in north-eastern states of India caused the
flow of the Brahmaputra river in Assam to breach an embankment in Lakhimpur
district. 81 of the 82 affected villages are reported to be surrounded by
water. Government reports indicate around 1 lakh people affected while media
reports say numbers could be higher. The NDRF is carrying out rescue
operations in the affected areas. UN agencies are in contact with the
district administration and monitoring the situation. The rapid assessment
by the Rural Volunteers Centre has identified food aid and water and
sanitation as immediate priorities.
