LAKHIMPUR, July 1: Hundreds of villages have been submerged as the rising
waters of the Brahmaputra breached about a 100-metre stretch of the
state-of-the-art embankment at Matmorah that was constructed using the
geo-fabric technology. The embankment cost Rs 140 crore. According to
sources, about 13,581 families of 220 villages have been rendered homeless
as their houses were submerged by flood waters.
The Malaysian company that had taken the construction works of the five-km
breach of the embankment could not complete the project allegedly due to
intervention of the State Water Resource Department and the district
administration. Natural calamities have also affected the work of the
project.
Hundreds of villages in East Dhakuakhana, Matmora, Kherkota, Dangdhara,
Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats have been inundated by flood
waters. Till filing of this report, the rising water submerged Dhakuakhana
Normal School, Dhakuakhana College, Girls' College, Commerce College and
many other educational institutions. One-third of Dhakuakhana town is under
water. People of North Lakhimpur subdivision are apprehensive of the rising
water level of Dikrong and Ranganadi. The district administration has
sounded a red alert in the district.
BSF personnel are busy in rescue operation
