GUWAHATI/JORHAT, July 2: Following incessant rains for the last three consecutive days, all the major rivers and their tributaries of the State have been flowing above their danger levels. The Brahmaputra, Barak and their tributaries like Buridehing, Subansiri, Dikrong, Desang, Puthimari, Dhansiri, Pagladia, Manash, Beki, Sonkoch, Katakhal, Kushiara, Monu Gumti etc are in spate. The situation has worsened with the release of water from the Kurishu dam in Bhutan at the pace of 698 cubic metres per second. Water has also been released from Karbi Langpi Hydel Project in Asom. Lower Asom districts like Bagsa and Udalguri are at stake. Water of the Karbi-Langpi project inundated Baithalangshu, Longjap etc areas. According to official sources, over 1.5 lakh people have been affected and 30,000 hectares of crop land affected by floods. As many as 300 families of greater Borbeel area comprising 10 villages under Majuli subdivision in Jorhat district were
completely submerged by flood waters today. Official sources said after the breach of the Matmora embankment in North Lakhimpur district last night, the rising water flows towards the riverine island and submerged the villages from Panikhaiti area to Dariadubi village. The numbers of affected villages may go up overnight, sources added. When contracted, Majuli SDO Deepak Kumar Handique said due to the incomplete work of Jengrai–Naya Bazzar PWD road the water breached the road in the Borbeel area this morning and inundated the villages. However, no families have been reportedly rendered homeless so far, he added. The Jengrai–Naya Bazzar PWD road, which is a strong flood protection dyke for hundreds of villages under Majuli subdivision, was breached last year. Though the Brahmaputra Board took up the construction of the dyke this year with a cost of Rs 2.50 crore, it was too late. The work was started from June 11 and only 30 per cent of work is
complete till date. There are reports that the board has already released Rs 1 crore from the allotted funds.Hundreds of villages have been submerged as the rising waters of the Brahmaputra breached about a 100-metre stretch of the state-of-the-art embankment at Matmora that was constructed using the geo-fabric technology yesterday. The embankment cost Rs 140 crore. The Malaysian company that had taken the construction works of the five-km breach of the embankment could not complete the project allegedly due to intervention of the State Water Resource Department and the district administration.Hundreds of villages in East Dhakuakhana, Matmora, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats have been inundated by flood waters. The rising water submerged Dhakuakhana Normal School, Dhakuakhana College, Girls’ College, Commerce College and many other educational institutions.  GUWAHATI, July 2 – A red alert was sounded in Lakhimpur district as the 100-metre stretch of the state-of-the art Matmora embankment, which was constructed using the geo-fabric technology at a cost of Rs 140 crore, was washed away by the gushing water of the Brahmaputra yesterday, reports PTI. As a result, nearly 300 villages with a population of 14,000 people were affected with the East Dhakuakhana, Matmora, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats inundated by flood water, official sources said.

As heavy rains lashes the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra with the possibility of further rise in water level, the Lakhimpur district administration sounded the red alert and deployed BSF personnel for rescue operation.

Our North Lakhimpur Correspondent added: The Malayasian firm Sueskira, which was constructing the geo-tube embankment has been blamed for slow progress of work as it has so far completed works on 3,500 meters of the 5-km-long embankment.

The flood water entered through the 1,500 metre long incomplete stretch submerging 220 villages of the Gaon Panchayats of Matmora.

Immediately after the flood, the SDO (Civil) of Dhakuakhana, Khanindra Saikia and Revenue Circle Officer Diwakar Doley visited the construction site at Matmora with boats provided by the Army.

Meanwhile, an unit of National Disaster Response Force arrived at Dhakuakhana to take rescue operations.http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=jul0309/at01
