I can give you my experiences with tapeless recording.
For the last year I've had the XDCAM HD format and I absolutely love
it. XDCAM HD is definitely the new Betacam. The medium is optical
disc, can be re-written hundreds of times, can be used as archive
storage and is CHEAP ($25 for an hours worth of HD). True, it doesn't
have the color space of HDCAM but it is better than HDV. I can access
clips from the camera to play back in the field for the client without
fear. I don't need a deck to upload into FCP. Sony is constantly
updating the transfer software to keep up with Apple's upgrades....
I could go on and on about this product, but I'm not a sales person
for Sony. All I can tell you is that for my workflow, I have found my
"happy place".
