My name is Kristin and I am two credits away from graduating from
Florida Atlantic University with a BA in Communications, Film and
Video. This fall I am enrolled in two classes, both are at night and
weekly. Currently I am working as an Account Executive/Graphic
Designer/Event Planner for a magazine. Its a very flexible schedule,
however sales is not my passion. I am eager for the opportunity to
start at an entry level position in the production field, weather it be
pre-post. If anyone is hiring or could offer me some recommendations I
would greatly appreciate it. I have been trying everything from
craigslist, monster, production hub, myspace jobs, career builder,
ect....and still no luck. Please contact me if you would like to see

For one, what's with that second email address? Besides getting a bit of attention, it's not the right sort of attention for a professional,. My 2 cents. My first suggesytion is to change that.

I would agree...it is time to drop the "kiddie in college" handles and move to the professional impression that you want an employer to see. That really took me by surprise, as well.

Not really...most are not hiring/nor will most people know her father. I don't see that an apology would be warranted either way. She is looking for advice and guidance and we are pointing out something that she should definitely change. Not everyone knows every one else's daddy and what they do...especially potential employers. And they may just not be a fishing fan.
Nor will a lot of employers see the humor that was obviously used in the email address when it was created. Maybe a disclaimer or family history note in every email to explain the email name would solve this problem...lol! I'm kidding of course. She really should move away from the "facebook" kiddie email address and get a more professional address...like the top address she posted with...give the other one to her friends.

I couldn't agree with Tim more.
On another note, I would suggest doing as much interning as possible, yes even for free. Perhaps someone needs an extra hand on a shoot or needs help for a day organizing a tape library, you get the idea. Some of my experience is that it's not about looking for a job, it's about looking for opportunity.

BTW: If your dad is Jose Wejebe, The Spanish Fly, tell him to pull a line at ESPN and get you an internship or something. Or work on his show. As the great fisherman, "Ivana Kacha Bigun" says, cast out as many lines as possible and something will bite.

Let me apologize to everyone that may have taken my other email address
the wrong way. Bob is right, my dad does have a show called the
Spanish Fly, and he used to call me his "mini". He's Cuban and a
fisherman, so he named his boat the Spanish Fly, then came the show,
and the nickname stuck. I have had that email address for over ten
years and signed up to this users group a few years ago. I couldn't
post under the other address, so I included both. Since I was made
aware that it could be taken the wrong way I made the necessary changes
through changing my account info. As far as my grammar goes it
obviously not perfect, but I was under the impression that this was a
discussion group and not a place of strict formality. Between working
two jobs, applying and interviewing for more, moving, and putting my
dog to sleep in the past week, my attention to detail drifted for a
moment. Again I'm sorry. I assure anyone that my resume does not look
anything like my request for advice from people I thought were here to
help one another.

How about creating your own show? You could use the family connection. I have met 3 people involved in outdoor sports shows. One is a muscular outdoors type, another produces his own shows and the last was a tv reporter who started his own cable channel in Chicago. What do you need? Aside from the obvious equipment a good idea might be the most important thing.

Yes on more of a true career guidance note, I would say as well that you need to find a focus, as well. There are a lot of "types" of production out there to target...find where your interest is...reality, broadcast show production, commercial/industrial, documentary, corporate...and any of hundreds of niches. You may find a few employers that dabble in various niches, but more often or not you will get hired due to your definite experience in just a few of the niches available.
Most want say a producer or editor with long-format broadcast show production experience or the same with "reality" experience...do some soul searching and see what interests you the most and target that...if you have no desire for documentary work...then it really is not going to pay you to work for a company that does mostly that type of work.
Go with your heart young fledgling...and you will one day soar with the eagles. Good luck to you...it is a sometimes rough, but very rewarding path. I've had a blast, done a lot traveling, and I am not done yet!

This is a forum for just what you seek and yes we all make typus...or I mean typoes...or ti-pos...well you get my drift. The main point that some of us were trying to make is that all times...in this industry...your professional positioning is everything. How are you to know that I am not looking for someone such as yourself right now? True...it is a user group, but I guarantee you when I am ready to hire people in about 6 months...this group is one of the first places I am gong to look for referrals for potential employees.
You must always protect your professionalism and your professional image like it is gold. That coupled with integrity will get you very far in this industry. We were not trying to be mean hearted...it was a point that really needed to be made to you and it was out of concern for that image that you portrayed to us...who may just be potential employers.
I am truly sorry for the struggles you have been dealing with...the loss of a pet and moving are both very stressful and very trying, but you have to maintain focus through adversity or this business is not for you. You sound like a very smart girl and you have one thing that I had none of when I started out...industry contacts. Make use of them...and grow them into more contacts and listen to what people say here...sometimes with a grain of salt, but always from the perspective that most of us have been there and done that...and we may be blunt, but whatever is said here is at least something you should think about, if not act on. Learn not to take things/listings/advice personally...you have to detach yourself from that...or once again this industry will kill you...there is always someone that is going to tell you to revise this or that stinks...redo it...or we need another take.
With all this said...edit your "signature" for your emails and have one for friends that need to get the spanish fly email and another labeled "professional" or something that does not have it in it. This listing that I am responding to still has the potentially inappropriate email address listed in the signature...that is where I first noticed it at the beginning of this thread.
We are here to help...always remember that...however mundane some of the responses may seem at the time. We really do wish you the best and keep in touch...you never know who may be ready to hire someone like you...even if it is off a listing group like this one.

Hello Kristin,
Having seen your father's web site, I will agree with Alan on this one. Especially if you have some interest in diving, possibly producing some pieces for "Vida del Mar" would be a great starting point. Underwater video can be really awesome and, of course, it would allow you to get some experience on many fronts in the video / post production realm.
Internships are the key to getting known and finding work. While gripping is often hard work, nothing beats first hand experience. If you need some contacts, I have a friend, Richard Brown, with Artisan Pictureworks ( see rentals ) in Atlanta, who is constantly in Florida diving and shooting. He might be able to give you some worthwhile input regarding opportunities.

Volunteering is a great way to make contacts and get your foot in the door. I've done it a few times and ended up with a paid news video editor/shooter job at an ABC affiliate. Even the paid job didn't pay much, but it was still a good opportunity.
One of the guys who also worked there was Mike Sussman, who had recently graduated from the FSU film school. He used to talk about Star Trek a lot and had a collection of laser disks. Talk about following your passion. Mike got a entry level job and eventually ended up writing some of real Star Trek episodes, among many other things.

Speaking of internships -- I am a “winter resident” of Boca Raton/Delray Beach who is attempting to locate gently-used Mac computers/accessories for a group of college students from Salisbury University who are participating in our summer internship programs in Ocean City, Md. And Bethany Beach, Del. I have checked Craigslist and Apple Store refurb. with little success. Check with a mac user group. In Gainesville (the meeting is tonight) there is alway someone offering free or low cost older equipment to deserving individuals. The information presented at these groups is usually free and valuable. Even though I'm a certified A+ PC tech and own 3 of them, I seem to be more comfortable on the mac side of life.

Perhaps no one has that opportunity. Perhaps no one wanted to because her email address gave the wrong impression. With all due respect Marian, most of us are fighting the fight daily to find work, keep clients and maintain good relations. When we see something that could potentially hurt someone looking for a job, it's to HER benefit that we point it out.
The emails WERE on point in my view. In addition to advice on her email address, she did get good sound advice, that's what she sought. Most of us are small business owners or freelancers, we don't all have the opportunities she's looking for, you work for a station, what's happening there? Any opportunities for Kristin?

It's tough out there right now for everybody, not just folks working
freelance or with a small company. CBS4 had a big round of staff cuts
a few months ago, and NBC6 is up for sale. We've had a few layoffs at
WSVN also. CBS is looking to making a lot of cuts on the network
level, and that's just the obvious stuff that I know about.

I got to a silly email address went a little overboard, but the
positive encouragement and suggestions are more than appreciated.
Just yesterday I was called in to do some camera work for an old
contact that owns Bluewater Entertainment with a possible job in the
next few weeks. Some on the link that people sent to me were very
helpful and I already got call backs and interviews (6!) just today.
In light of that again thank you EVERYONE for your time, and to all
that positively pushed me in the right direction. Again if anyone is

Does anyone have experience with Apple Remote Desktop?
I know this is slightly off topic, so please contact me off list, unless everyone would like to know thw answer.
I'm having a connection failed message when I try to control my main computer remotely, I can do everything else though. I've checked all settings and I'm stumped.

Thanks for the quick responses.Here's the situation, I'm using ARD on a MacBook Pro (the administrator) running OS 10.5.3. My client computer is a MacPro running 10.4.11. I have doubled checked the ARD settings on the MacPro. I have installed the latest client package as generated from ARD on the MacBook. I can send a message, I can share the screen. But when I go to observe, control or curtain, I get an error message that says Connection failed.The MacPro has a static IP and is connected to the Internet via ethernet. The MacBook is connected via Airport. I did try to connect via ethernet, the computer connected to the internet, but I received the same error message. My goal is to be able to control my MacPro when I'm on location, or in a hotel room, so that i can get additional editing done, without transposing drives etc.Thanks....Alan
