Hey all,

Awhile back you all suggested the HV20 for a client/friend of mine and he got one and loves it thanks so much.

Now I am interested in one for myself...gearing up for a doc shoot in July and think this would be perfect for it.  Anyone know a cheap, but reputable supplier for this camera.  B&H is still listing it for near $800.00, but I have seen it at a place called 86th Street Photo Video for around half that.  I would be more comfortable with a referral from the group.  Also, what lens size it...I'd like to get a reasonably priced wide angle and maybe a telephoto, as well...if you all think they work good with it.  Feel free to contact me direct and off list with this info if it is deemed too off topic.

Next question is more to the goals of this group...sorry.  With the HDMI out on the HV20/30...what would be my best work flow with the IO/HD?  Plug in to HDMI in...digitize as ProRes?...Post it...Output it media.  Or just stay in the native HDV...what native is it...sony has their own hdv...jvc has their own hdv...and I am sure Canon has their own flavor, as well...just looking for posting information before I get the camera.

Thanks all,

I wanted to respond immediately to this post from Tim because I want to make sure no one in our group gets ripped off by internet scam artists posing as legitimate electronics dealers.

If you want a Canon HV30 (next model up from the HV20, can shoot 30p as well, not much else different), which is a great little camera, go to B&H or Amazon, or a local retailer, even if it's $800, the going price these days. Amazon will give you free shipping and no sales tax.

Retailers claiming they'll sell it online for ridiculous prices are SCAMS. Here's a couple of links with more info:

There are a handful of dealers with over a dozen websites that are total ripoff artists, bait and switch scammers, and scumbags that belong in JAIL. Once a website gets known for being a scam, they close it and open another one with a different name.

BE CAREFUL!!

I've always liked B&H, because they do what they say they will and have been very gracious with returns. There are a lot of other places, but be careful because some of them will try high pressure to up sell you other items that you may not need or want.

I shoot on a V1U and take the HDMI out into an HD-Connect MI, this converts it to HD-SDI. I then go in to FCP via an AJA LHe board. It converts it to ProRes 422. The footage looks great and is easy to work with. It does require a bit more storage than HDV though.

Good Luck...Alan

Dave,

I order another bracket from Armstrong for the boat ladder. The first
one they sent was not cut for the transom angle. They are sending
another and I'll return this one for credit. Today Scott and I got
the old bracket off. It's a hard job because the bolts are very hard
to get to and require a socket extension about 3 feet long to reach
it. Since the bracket side was sheared off and the bolts were bent, I
had to use Vice Grips to get the old bolts out after we extracted the
nuts from the inside. All went well and I'm awaiting the new bracket
spacer and plate.
I also mounted a spring hatch holder, similar to the live well, on
the front console hatch for the ice chest were the drinks go. That
was also a success and now the hatch lid stays open when you raise it.
I pulled both batteries out for better access to the transom ladder
bracket and since I have them out I am going to check them and charge
them up. Filled and topped off the oil tanks in the bilge to full
level and touched up some wiring in the bilge area and cleaned. I
still have some oil in the bilge from last summer's repairs.
Fixed the live well pump
Fixed the washdown pump
Oil reserved tank problem fixed.

Next I'm fixing some of the snaps on the cushions and installing the
front boot cover. It will be a nice place to get out of the sun and
rest.
A pain when you want to fight fish or cast from the front.

Got the cast net out and I'll be practicing in the back yard.

OK, so far I've sent personals about my Hammond organ obsession and
my boating repairs.
I've got to be more careful or I might REALLY get myself in trouble!

No worries, it was fun. Let's pass the hat for gas! ;-)

Last year the group was raffling off Blackmagic Intensity Pro PCIe
cards. They have HDMI in. If you have a Mac Pro tower, that might be
an option.

In response to Tim's inquiry I'm going to post a couple of workflow solutions for the Canon HV20/30 and 24P. First is an older post from Video Guru Allan Tepper. Much thanks to Allan for this post. The second is a post from a very informative website called
http://www.hv20.com

http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/

Brooks

----------------------------------------------------------------

Allen Tepper Info

24P 60i to 24P for film out

Create a new HDV 1080/30p sequence. Call the sequence Capture only and capture clips

Export all captured clips to ProRes422 to a folder on your media drive you’ll remember later.

Save and quit FCP.

Open the first clip in Cinema Tools using File>Open Clip. (Cinema Tools comes with FInal Cut Studio.)

Click on the Reverse Telecine button

Select F1-F2.

Click New (smaller).

Select 23.98 in the pulldown menu, since Apple abbreviated to 2 decimals :)

Check where it says Standard upper/lower.

Select Style 2 in the pulldown menu.

Select C2D1 in the radio button.

File>Save as... Remove the .rev suffix to overwrite the original file.

Quit Cinema Tools and re-launch FCP.

Create a new “1080/24p” ProRes422 sequence. Name this new sequence Edit or something like that.

This post is a follow up for Tim and others who want to see what is
possible with a small consumer camera like the Canon HV20/30.
Here is a link to a YouTube clip from Tony Reale who has tricked out
his Canon HV30 for film type work with rails system, Matt Box w
French Flag, DOF adapter, 35mm Lens, 7" VGA Widescreen LCD monitor w

etc. This is a 2 part video so look for part 2 in the youtube sidebar.

As a matter of fact, I dropped him an email thanking him for the
video and suggested he add cutaway close ups. I'm in the process of
assembling a list of the products he is using, options and retailers.
Some of the manufacture names he mentions are sometimes hard to
understand.
Like the rail system manufacture Cinevate and the monitor Lilliput.
Others are Mayflash component to RGC adapter and Brevis which is the
DOF adapter.

>>> Hello Everyone,

I recently shot a quick green screen video for a client. It's a short
deal with a spokesperson talking to camera. It's one take, no cuts.
My client now has asked if i can output with the green screen
replaced by an alpha channel so they can key on a web site.

I used the chroma-key filter, keyed out the green screen, it looks
nice. I exported with the animation codec and when I imported the
file back into FCP, it has the alpha and keys fine. My problem is
that the file is close to 1 gb in size. Is there a better (and
smaller file size) way to do this?

Thanks...Alan

Just a thought...I do this all the time...contact or have them contact the web designer and get the exact specs that he needs to work with and how he wants the video output.  You can make points with the old client by saving them a step and it will expidite them getting the video on their website.

It is so much easier to go to the end user on stuff like this and find out how they need it in order to work with it.

Just a thought...but works for me.

Great idea. I have spoken with their web guru and all he knows is that it has to have an alpha. I had a thought though. Because they don't need a full size image, I'm going to try and scale the size down on the timeline, and then output it as an animation codec.

I'll keep you posted.

Final Cut Pro 6: 1080p24 workflow for Canon HV20 camcorder

This advanced article discusses workflow ideas for incorporating
1080p24 HDV material from a Canon HV20 camcorder into Final Cut Pro 6.

Final Cut Pro 6 and Canon HV20 camcorders are both capable of working
with 1080p24 material, but due to differing characteristics in the
ways that the media is handled, special care is required so that
interlacing artifacts and pulldown cadence issues are not introduced
in your work.

The steps below are meant to impart general workflow overviews. For
details on performing any of the steps provided, refer to the User
Manuals (available from the Help menu in each respective Final Cut
Studio application).
HDV native capture, Compressor workflow

Note: ProRes is used as an example in this workflow; other codecs can
also be used. An advantage to this workflow is that Compressor is
able to perform Reverse Telecine on temporally-compressed media,
while Cinema Tools cannot.

1. In Final Cut Pro, Log and Capture your clips shot as 1080p24
from the HV20 using the Easy Setup named "HDV, 29.97, HDV - 1080i60
FireWire Basic".
2. In Compressor, choose Add File and navigate to the capture
scratch folder for the clips you captured and open them all.
3. Select the first clip in the batch.
4. Choose the setting named "Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive
material" (found in Settings tab > Apple > Other Workflows > Advanced
Format Conversions > Apple Codecs), and drag it onto the first clip.
5. Double-click the setting on the first clip to highlight the
Inspector window.
6. In Inspector > Encoder Settings > Video Settings, change the
framerate to Custom, and enter 23.976.
7. In Inspector > Frame Controls, enable Frame Controls and make
the following settings:
1. Set Frame Controls to On
2. Set Deinterlace to Reverse Telecine
8. Click Save As to save this setting with a name such as "HV20
HDV 24p to ProRes 24p".
9. Add this new Custom setting to all your clips and submit the
batch.

The resulting clips will be 24p and can be edited in a 24p sequence
in Final Cut Pro with no interlacing or cadence issues.

I'm looking for a way in FCP to accurately emulate the "film flash"
that is so overused in every music video. (not just dissolve to white
and back)
It's the flash effect when a film camera cuts and the operator
forgets to keep his eye to the viewfinder.
