I have to buy a digital camera for a guy where I work.  He's older than me and not too techy.  In fact he's not techy at all.  I need a point and shoot with simple software so he can get the pics in the computer and get them mailed to a committee.  Any suggestions under $200.00.

Simple software.  Auto reduction in size when emailing.  Easy to empty camera memory.  Plain ole batteries are better.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

There is a MAC camera? :-)

The camera and the software are really two separate issues.

For PC software try Picasa. It's about as simple as you can get for organizing photos. http://picasa.google.com/ It's free. Just plug in a memory cartridge, or connect the camera to a computer and Picasa will automatically extract and organize the pictures into albums by date. You can email pictures, with automatic resizing, with one click. You can easily upload pictures from Picasa to a Google photo album.

You can use any camera you like. In that price range, there is really very little difference in digital cameras these days.

Actually, only the "M" is capitalized.... and as a matter of fact there was a Mac camera. It was one of the very first consumer digital cameras to come to the market. But that's just a side issue. When choosing a digital camera, software is an integral part of the equation, thus my question... logical, I thought.

If it IS a Mac, then you don't need any software. It's already on the computer. You can actually throw away the disc that comes with the camera. Just connect the camera's USB cable to the camera and the Mac and iPhoto will automatically launch and offer t download your pictures. When done it further offers to erase your camera's memory so you're ready to go again. Very, very simple. If you want to use a card reader it works the same way.

Fuji S700. Got one. Like it. Not quite small enough to be pocketable,
but has 10X zoom. Leave it on Auto, learn how to work the zoom, and
you'll get pretty good pics. Don't know about the software; I'm a linux
user and all the software is for windows. But it's seen as a mass
storage device, so it shouldn't cause any trouble. Your Nikons and
Canons probably take better pictures, but I think quality/dollar the
Fuji is hard to beat.

Rory (aka Bozo)...and it's pretty stout. I've had mine over seven months
and haven't broken it yet. :) (I'm a retired firefighter. If you place a
firefighter in a padded cell with two bowling balls and come back in ten
minutes, one ball will be broken and he won't be able to find the other
one.) I've only misplaced it once or twice.

Les,

Everyone will tell you different, so I will start...

I like Canon... I have the old 300D (Digital Rebel) and I still love it!  At work, we bought a Canon A720IS and the lady who uses it, loves it!  So that is my suggestion...

Oh yeah... I meant to add,

If you are using Windows XP, just download Picasa and then follow the directions here, http://tinyurl.com/6cynlb to setup Windows to automatically copy the pics over and view them in Picasa.

The man said... "I need  a point and shoot with simple software so he can get the pics in the computer and get them mailed to a committee."

He's talking about a camera AND software. Cameras may be platform independent but software is not. So I simply asked what platform the man uses.

I had no intention of recommending a camera. Under $200 there's thousands to choose from. It's more important to get them in your hands and see how they feel. But a software recommendation needs more info. God forbid that he uses the crap that passes for software that comes with most cameras.

Capitalization was for emphasis. If you are running Windows Vista, you don't have to install any software either. Media management, including photos, videos and audio are built into the Windows explorer. Just connect your camera to the computer and it will automatically transfer the pictures. Explorer has media specific formats for displaying folders containing media files. You can email pictures, with automatic resizing, with a single click, or view a slide show, or burn them to a CD or DVD. Personally I prefer to take a couple of minutes to download and install Picasa. Very, very simple.

Why are Apple fanatics always so defensive, arrogant and obnoxious? Sheesh!

As for platform, if you assume Windows you would have a 93% chance of being correct. Usually if someone is looking for software for a Mac they will say so since it usually assumed that they are using a Windows machine. By the way, a Mac is a PC!

And runs Windows better, faster and more reliably than a PC, (in the

Speaking of obnoxious..... we Mac Folk have been putting up with
verbal and written abuse from PC and Windows users since 1984.
Only recently have many of those vociferous, verbal abusers have been
quietly buying Macs for the very reason we've been trying to tell them
for the past 24 years.

I use a camera professionally so it is too big for me to schlep
everywhere. For a pocket camera, I use Canon Powershots. My big camera
is a Nikon, and Nikon vs Canon is like Mac vs PC, so a Nikon user
recommending a Canon is noteworthy. There are several models at
several pricepoints. Smaller than a deck of cards, easy to operate in
automatic mode, and easy to override the settings if you wish. Comes
bundled with useful software.

The most important feature in selecting a small camera is shutter lag.
Some inexpensive cameras have a noticeable delay betweeen the time you
press the shutter and the picture is taken. That delay is when you
miss the shot. Get one with a short shutter lag.

Buy from a local camera store rather than on the net or an
electronics. The clerks should be knowlegdable and it is important
that you handle it and try it. They are occasionally willing to give
you a loaner if you need repairs, too.

I'm in a bank.  We use PCs.  Most of us have XP Pro on our computers.  I use Picasa at home.
Thank you guys for your input.  I've decided to get the cheapest Canon I can find.  I found out he has been using a Canon Elph in emergencies and likes it.  I use Picasa so I can help the guy over the phone.  Its easier when you already know a little about the software.

I love Canon's feature set, having bought two Powershot S80 cameras
(first one got stolen), totaling over $1000, and both of them had the
same fatal error.

Google "Canon E18 error" That's why I won't buy another Canon. Too
bad, because when they worked, they were great.

If Sony still makes the camera that records onto 1.44MB floppies (can't
recall the name, but I have two at work), then that's about as simple
and cheap as you can get. At low res (640x480) you can get about 30
jpegs on a disk, and just copy files as needed. No additional software
required.

We use them for any quick photo documentation we need. Grab a floppy,
shoot some shots, label it and slap it in the file folder. We don't
even bother to look unless there's a dispute. I guess floppies are
going the way of cassette tapes. Too bad, because there are some real
advantages, storage and recovery-wise for specialized uses.

Reminds me of when I first started my old job at OSU(Oregon). I brought my CD version of Mastercook. I opened the slot and shoved it in. After it didn’t work, I opened it again and pulled it out scratched beyond hope. I stuck it in a slot that was before the the 3.5’s. Pissed me off!  LOL

When we flew back from Puerto Rico to Santa Fe at the end of June we changed
planes in Houston. We had to take the shuttle train to another terminal. I
left my camera bag with my Nikon D40, extra lens, and flash on the train.
The worst part was when we travel back and forth I keep all our important
data files on a small external hard drive. When I realized what I'd done I
freaked out. I immediately called the airport and Continental lost and found
and left my name and phone number, not expecting to ever see the camera
again. After about 5 minutes the phone rang and the person said they had my
camera bag at the information desk. I couldn't believe it. She said the guy
who turned it in said he lost a nice camera one time so he knew how it felt.
If the guy had still been there I would have sure given him a nice tip. At
least there are still a few honest people in the world.

My Minolta SRT101 that I left in a bar in Boulder, CO one time is a
different story. Never saw that one again.

And I can run MacOS on a PC. It's called a Hackintosh.

Really, the only difference between a Mac and a PC now is the OS. And
if you want to know the truth, Macs run a modified BSD, or "Just another
Unix" or, for those late in the IT debate, Linux. It only took Jobs 15
years or so to realize that even his computer needed a command prompt,
even if you have to telnet into it.

And, so far as *I* am concerned, Windows and Macs both stink. Amiga was
the best thing that ever was :-) with Linux on a PC an acceptable
substitute.

Macs stank until. the G3s came out. Then 300mhz on a Mac was as fast or
faster than 300mhz on a PC. Before this...ugh! I had Power Macs that
were rated at 233 or 266 or even 300mhz, and my 486/100 would run
circles around them.

And in 1999, I was working for Continental Cablevision, and we had
mostly Macs, and we had need of downloading pics from a digital camera.

Macs have NOT quietly had the capability for 10 years. The crap we went
thru to get pics off that camera was of biblical proportions.

Ok, the men in white are here to take me back to my private suite now.
I hope you all don't mind :-)

You talking about a Mac?  I just got a new system with an HD tuner and video card, Blu ray player, home theater sound with a 22 inch flat screen for just under $2000.   :-)

And it still runs Windows.

Garry, I've got thousands of pictures on my old Computer.  Is there a way to upload multiple folders in Picasa, or am I stuck highlighting and uploading them one folder at a time?

Given that it is a windows computer, I'd expect it to...

I'm just saying...it's like spending money on a Lexus body, Lexus
interior, Lexus brakes, and whatnot, and putting a Chevy 4-cylinder
under the hood. It may have lots of pretties on it, but it's still
going to run like...well...a Windows machine.

Yeah, but if that Lexus body and Chevy 4-cylinder get you from Point A to Point B, then what's wrong with that?

Then you were just doing it wrong.

I've been working with graphics, video and sound in Ad Agency
environments since the early 90's, and NEVER had a "Biblical
Proportion" problem.

I would've been happy to solve your problems for you, but you didn't
call me.

Oh, then, no problem. But the Chevy is more likely to break down, is
underpowered for the class of auto, and needs more maintenance.

Which reminds me: my nephew saw a VW Phaeton on the road yesterday--
here in Indiana!--and says they have twin V-6's. How can you do that
without making the car 8 feet wide??

obnoxious.

Uh.... for how long?? Kinda like those fiberglass-sports car body

I know this is late, but I just got a new system with an AMD 64 4 processor, with an HD tuner and video card, Blu ray player, home theater sound, 3 GB of memory for $649.00.  Replaced Vista with Suse Linux 64, very, very fast.
