i have school video no. 20 saved to my hard drive. i have watched and paid attention. i do not have autocad on my computer. a coworker sent me a file to import into su. i am not sure what i am doing wrong. the message i am getting says"Error opening AutoCAD File internal error. This does not appear to be a valid AutoCAD DWG or DXF file or the file is write protected." my coworker assures me that it is a valid file and not readonly either. please enlighten me.
I would suggest finding a free dwg viewer and see if you can open it
with that. If you can't, then the problem is mostly likely in the
file. If you can open it, it might have something to do with xrefs or
it might be too new of an autocad file. do you have Illustrator?
That is another application that can open dwg/dxfs, although I would
just use Illustrator to see if the file is legit and not necessarily
as a route to getting the file into SketchUp.

You might need to check on versions, both your SketchUp and your coworker's AutoCAD. Older SketchUp versions can not import AutoCAD 2007 files: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=ajg9d7mmp8rt_4gp925h (SketchUp version 6.4.112 - Maintenance Release 4)
Both Litecad and A9Cad free download versions will open a good dwg file, so just look at it there to see if it works. If it does it open in SU, dumping the text

If he has autocad 2008, I would guess that is the culprit. Can you
ask him to give the file to you in 2004? That would be a safe bet.
Maybe there is an online converter that will go from one version to
another? If there isn't there should be.

Please forgive the following should it seem ridiculous, misleading or plain wrong.
It has always been my understanding that only the Pro or Pro Trial versions have import/export options available. It has also been in my experience that very often the license is not always placed in the system where it needs to be.
From the computer user profile/account you use, did you confirm that you have IN FACT (or have access to) the Pro version?? You do have v.6, right???
i do have version 6. it is my understanding that version 6 can import AutoCAD files. am i wrong? i can and do import aerial photos, but i thought this version was compatible, if not, this explains why it is not working. does anyone know for sure?

So, there is indeed a definitive answer to THAT question. _________
Regarding why your setup won't import a DXF/DWG file, you might try importing a simple DXF, then a simple DWG. Check whether the import feature works for each format. Be sure to stick to the 2007 file format (not 2008).
If my memory recalls, go-2-school podcasts touched on the import/export limitations (if any) of SU 6. Maye you can look there. I'm sure Google MUST have a link to that information, .. wouldn't they??
I'll keep looking around. You should do the same. It probably would be a good idea to link the result as a new topic with the subject <<limitations of SU Free>>, if it doesn't already exist somewhere.
