Try POVRay http://www.povray.org/ , there is a plugin for SU and for
rendering seems to work (here
http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/RUBY_Library_Depot.htm)
, I tried some shapes (basic). Here is a trial I made a while ago.

I can post the SU model I used. Blender seem to big of shot for me for
rendering, although, I may consider for organic modeling (due to lack
of SU Pro's sandbox) in the future.

There are other free renderers, this was my second alternative which I
did not try yet http://www.softlab.ntua.gr/~jpanta/Graphics/Kerkythea/
