Subject: SketchUp Community has a New Home!
I'm excited to tell you that the new SketchUp Help Forum is here!

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup

Here are some features that we're particularly excited about:

- You can find answers before you even ask your question! The forum
will automatically suggest a similar thread as you begin typing your
question in a new post.
- The SketchUp Sages and Google employees will be able to mark any
reply as "Best Answer" and show this reply right below the original
question. If you post a question, you can mark any reply to your
question as "Best Answer" as well.
- Create richer posts by referencing all kinds of online sources,
including images and videos.
- Get to know others in the forum better by creating a useful profile,
which includes an avatar.
- As you build your reputation as an expert, you increase your "level"
in the forum. After a while, who knows - you can be the next SketchUp
Sage!

We're going keep this Group open for a little while longer so folks
have time to get use to the change. We highly recommend asking your
questions in the new forum so they will stay active and engaged after
we turn off the ability to post in this Group. In about two weeks
we'll be turning off the ability to post in these groups and moving
them (along with the other Groups we've archived in the past) to a new
SketchUp Archive where you can search for any old posts.

Lastly, I'd love to hear what you think about the new forum and this
transition. Feel free to post responses in this thread, and I look
forward hearing your feedback.

Hi Jody,

Why when I try to see the Sketchup Help Forum, there is nothing
there about sketchup, nothing at all?
The part /p/sketchup is constantly cut off of the link. So I get the
overall 'Help Forum' with no way to access the Sketchup Help Forum.

I do have a previous link that worked/works.
b.t.w. There is an answer of mine in there from last week (it shows as
the nr's:1) but when I search for it, just to check, I get zero
results.

Here is the "correct" link:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup?hl=en
with the "?hl=en" part at the end. Apparently, there are plans to make
it multi-lingual? (Hopefully not Hungarian though as it keeps driving
me nuts when I get constantly redirected if I don't want to :-)

Thanks Gaieus, I find the whole change process rather confusing.
It's as if there have to be a constand flood of changes to get
improvements, sorry to say. But right now I can't find anything
overthere. Not even what I have written. (just 1 answer last week).

I guess I'm better at sorting out problems with SU.

Gaieus,

Let me emphasize the words > ... now I can't FIND ....
Search brings me to old posts in this very forum.
Like I said, I posted there one time to see if / let know
that things worked. They did then. But no way I can retrieve
my answer. I was just checking.

Let's say, it's just me....

Hi Wodan3 & Gaieus,

Thanks for the heads up, I don't have an issue with the link if it
doesn't include a language code but that maybe an American visitor vs
other countries. The one true link is: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup?hl=en

Regarding your missing post, I've emailed you directly Wodan3 with
what I believe explains what happened. Otherwise you can click on your
Profile in the new Forum and see all of your posts (listed as
Questions and Answers.)

Hope that helps,
Jody

Hi SketchUp Guide Jody

I have been away from the Forums/Groups for a while and returned to
learn about 7.1 and the new forums.

Just so I understand this correctly, are these new Groups/Forums going
to replace the older ones ?
i.e. we no longer access the older locations and threads ?

Will we still be able to read the old threads at all ?

Hi Jody,

I have a nutty suggestion. Why not have a specific forum within Google
Sketchup Help for questions about use and navigation of the SU Help
forum. When I first encountered the "new" Help Forum, I had no idea
what was going on, nor was there a logical place to ask. This thread
is buried among others and easy to overlook.

I've since had questons about access to archived posts and others,
which I'd like to direct somewhere. I've posted questions about use
and navigation on the SU forums offered and received unhelpful,
impatient responses about posting inapproptiately (not really the
appropriate response in a forum labelled "Help"). This is really
communication 101, when you completely change a format users have
become accustomed to.

Hi Tim,

Its a great idea that we get talking about how to use the new Forum
though I'm not sure it deserves its own Forum heading. I made sure we
had the Courtyard where this topic could easily be discussed. It looks
like we've already got a couple of posts in there about the Forum. I
encourage you to bring this up there and we can all offer our input on
whats confusing, needs to be fixed, or just needs to be added. I'll
admit I'm adjusting to the difference as well but after being in there
for a couple of weeks its all making a lot more sense. You'll find the
Courtyard here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup/label?lid=2d2afbbc8898...

See you there!

Hi Snow Tiger,

You're correct that the SketchUp Group is being retired, though
archived so you'll still be able to reference the old Group (though
its going to land in a new Archive Super Group which I'll link once
this one is retired. You can link to posts from the Archived Group
into the new Forum for as long as you like.

Hi Huck,

Currently there isn't a direct attachment option in the new Forum but
we (the community Users) have been making the point repeatedly to the
developers and will continue to do so until we get that feature. For
now the best option is to upload your files to another site and link
them, the 3D Warehouse is a great place for SKP files, Flickr or
PicasaWeb are great for JPG files. I'm kind of liking DropBox (http://
getdropbox.com) for managing all file types so that I then own them
and can remove them at any point if thats a concern. Hopefully there
are even more options that others have found as I'm just one man. (c:

Hope that helps,
Jody

Hello SketchUppers,

I'm dropping by to say the day has arrived. This evening I'll be
setting all of these groups to Archives which can no longer be posted
to. The one exception is "3D Warehouse and Modeling for Google Earth"
which is going to leave behind this collection of Groups for a new
collection. As soon as its moved we'll be sure to include a link on
where to find it, you can continue to post in that one topic for the
time being. For all other SketchUp (or LayOut or Style Builder or 3D
Warehouse) issues we hope you'll join us at our new SketchUp forum
here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup?hl=en

We'll see you there!
