Summer/Fall 2009
Dear friends,
Wow. I'm not sure what happened to summer. One minute I'm graduating on Mother's Day in Durham, North Carolina, and the next I'm canning late August tomatoes in the kitchen of our new home in southern Michigan. It's been a busy, delightful, challenging three months as we adjust to our new life here...and I can't say I've done much writing. But I've read a lot, including Kathleen Norris, Wendell Berry, Barbara Kingsolver, and (drum roll, please) a myriad of cookbooks. Yes, cookbooks! By some odd miracle I have overcome 35 years of kitchenphobia--including the fear of knives, boiling water, hot ovens, and fractions (shudder)--and discovered that actually I kinda enjoy cooking. Quite a lot. It helps that our new kitchen is spectacular, that we've signed up for a weekly share of produce with an Amish farmer, and that someone, somewhere, invented the food processor.

Dear friends & faithful readers,
I'm happy to announce that I graduated from Duke University Divinity School on May 10 with a Master's in Theological Studies. It felt very, very good. I'm so thankful for the many people who encouraged me on that journey, including my patient readers. Now I can turn my energies back to freelancing--hurrah!

Summer 2008
Dear friends,
For those of you who have begun to wonder if I dropped off the planet, no fear: I'm still here, enjoying my summer off from graduate school--hurrah!--in my hometown of Petoskey, Michigan. Yep, we moved. Again. For the fifth time in three years. And we'll move again in late August, back to North Carolina for my final year of graduate school at Duke Divinity School. (And then--yes, you guessed it--we'll move AGAIN once I'm graduated next spring, though we don't yet know where. And I wonder why I'm tired all the time?!)

Lent 2008
Dear friends,
Spiritual smallness, I am learning, is a virtue. Lent is when we get honest with ourselves about how small we really are.
By grace, my small books are still out there, opening little cracks in portals that give me glimpses of various things God is up to. One of those things is the extraordinary way he is using <[link]> The One Year Daily Grind to touch one life at a time. Thanks to all of you who have written to me, sharing your stories! Meanwhile, <[link]> The God-Hungry Imagination has gotten on the radar of some of my heroes in the world of ministry. It's now being taught at Princeton Seminary, will be featured at the Prelude <[link]> Gathering in Kansas City before the "Everything Must Change" tour with Brian McClaren (in April), and has paved the way for me to lead two seminars at the National <[link]> Youth Workers Convention in Nashville this November. With each small crack in each new portal, I feel like a young child stepping further in and still further in, thinking, "this must be a simply enormous wardrobe!" The inside is larger than the outside. Small is the new big.

Dear friends,
It's been a long interlude since my last newsletter, so here are some highlights from the adventures of Sarah:
Last fall my husband Tom and I joined a community/hospitality house in east Durham, NC, which has been a wonderfully challenging and spiritually formative experience. The house is in an economically depressed area (okay, so we live in the Hood); and there are now four children under the age of three here, so there's never a dull moment! Dear friends,
Happy Holidays! I hope all is well at your end. Things are challenging but wonderful here in North Carolina. As many of you know, my husband and I moved in October to join Isaiah House, an intentional Christian community and hospitality ministry in east Durham. Dear friends,
Greetings from...wait -- what state am I in again? Oh, yeah: we're back in Durham, NC. We had a wonderful summer in Richmond, VA, where my husband had an internship at a local church as part of his graduate studies at Duke University Divinity School. He starts classes again today, and I've got my nose to the grindstone (read: laptop) in order to hit a major deadline this month. Are we geeks, or what?
