Project: Entrepreneur and enterprise. Leo Baekeland (1863-1944)

Leo Baekeland (1863-1944) was a Belgian-American chemist who invented Velox paper and Bakelite,

the first commercial fully synthetic polymer. The aim of the project is to conduct research into

entrepreneurship within a transatlantic environment. Baekeland as an individual and as an

entrepreneur will be examined with attention to his educational and familial background, his political

and ideological viewpoints and his scientific and intellectual networks. The project aims to be more

than a biography or a business history. It concerns the patterns of transatlantic transfer of

technology, science and people in the first half of the twentieth century. The research shall also

focus on the commercial failure of Baekeland's inventions in Belgium and their commercial success in

the United States.

The project is funded by the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) and will be conducted at the

research unit 'Social History after 1750' (http://www.nieuwstegeschiedenis.ugent.be/) in

collaboration with the Museum for the History of Science (http://mhsgent.ugent.be/).

Qualifications

The successful candidate is a social-economic or cultural historian or has a masters degree with

demonstrable interest in business history and/or the history of science. The candidate has

experience with historical research and masters Dutch, French and English, or is willing to learn these

languages. The candidate is an enthusiastic and inventive team player and must be willing to go

abroad as part of the research shall be conducted in the United States.

Offer

We offer a contract for four years with a competitive salary and the ability to follow an individualised

PhD-program at the UGent Doctoral School of Arts, Humanities and Law or the Doctoral School of

Project: Ondernemer en bedrijf. Leo Baekeland (1863-1944)

De Belgisch-Amerikaanse chemicus Leo Baekeland (1863-1944) is bekend als de uitvinder van Veloxpapier

en bakeliet, de eerste commerciële kunststof. Het doel van het project is een onderzoek naar

ondernemerschap en wetenschapstransfer in een transatlantische omgeving. Baekeland als individu

en als ondernemer zal onderzocht worden met speciale aandacht voor zijn opleiding en vorming,

familiale achtergrond en zijn wetenschappelijke en intellectuele netwerken. Het project wil meer zijn

dan een biografie of een ondernemingsgeschiedenis. Er zal ook aandacht besteed worden aan de

bredere context van de transatlantische transfer van technologie, wetenschap en menselijk kapitaal

in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Het onderzoek zal ook focussen op het commerciële falen

van Baekeland zijn uitvindingen in België en het commerciële succes in de Verenigde Staten.

Het project wordt gefinancierd door het Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FW0) en zal

uitgevoerd worden in de onderzoekseenheid 'Sociale Geschiedenis na 1750'

Profiel

U bent een sociaal-economisch historicus/a of cultuurhistoricus/a of u hebt een andere

masterdiploma met een aanwijsbare interesse voor wetenschapsgeschiedenis en/of

bedrijfsgeschiedenis. U hebt ervaring met historisch onderzoek en een goede kennis van het

Nederlands, Frans en Engels of u wil deze talen leren. Een deel van het onderzoek moet uitgevoerd

worden in de Verenigde Staten, onderzoek doen in het buitenland vormt geen obstakel. U bent een

enthousiaste en ondernemende teamspeler.

Aanbod

We bieden een contract van vier jaar, een competitief salaris en de mogelijkheid om een

geïndividualiseerd programma te volgen aan de Doctoral Schools van de Universiteit Gent.
