Hi all - I am looking for some material for one of my thesis chapters.
Does anyone know of anything written on the history of the use of
music in Protestant churches? I'm particularly interested in
evangelical Protestants. I have most of James White's books, Robert
Webber's encyclopedia set, R.J. Mouw/M. Noll's Wonderful Words of Life
and Hustad's Jubilate! Church Music in the Evangelical Tradition.

If anyone knows of any materials written on the influence of English
music on worship in evangelical churches in other languages/countries,
I'm also looking on that topic. Thank you!

Dear Sheri,

Here are a few additional suggestions:

* Martin Stringer's A Sociological History Of Christian Worship
(2005). Though not specifically focused on music, this book gives a
helpful and broad perspective on worship/liturgy in general.

* Robb Redman's The Great Worship Awakening (2002) provides a helpful
overview of the commercial infrastructure and trends in post-1970s US
evangelical Protestant congregational music.

* A number of recent dissertations written by members of this SIG
flesh out the post-1950s evangelical context further in their
introductory chapters. (Please, all, feel free to self-promote
here!) I'd recommend especially Anna Nekola's (2009) dissertation
"Between This World and the Next: The Musical 'Worship Wars' and
Evangelical Ideology in the United States, 1960-2005," which situates
conflicts over music more broadly in evangelical Protestant history in
the US.

Regarding your second question, are you looking for English (UK) or
English-language worship music? If the latter, I'd recommend Tim
Rommen's excellent chapter "North America as Sound" in Mek Some Noise:
Gospel Music and the Ethics of Style in Trinidad (2007).

Best regards,
Monique

Dear All,
A query on behalf of one of my graduate students, who is currently writing a
thesis (MMus) on a Sacred Harp community in Cork, Ireland. We really need
some more theory around the creation of community, as this is an ultimately
"artificial" community--it does not even have a religious basis. I think
we're fine on the Sacred Harp lit., but if anyone has ideas on "community"
lit., I would be very grateful.
Of course, we have core texts like the Benedict Arnold Imagined Communities,
but any other suggestions, particularly more recent ones, from any related
discipline would be gratefully received.
Many thanks.
Therese

Kind regards,

Hello Therese,

Mark Slobin's work on "affinity groups" and Etienne Wenger's "communities of practice" (this latter so widely applied as to sometimes seem unrecognizable) might be good places to look.

BTW, I am currently supervising an Hons thesis on Sacred Harp in Melbourne & Sydney, Australia!

Therese
Justin Clapp in Anthropology at UPenn in is just completing a
dissertation on issues of music and community broadly speaking, why
don't you get in touch with him. He has worked with contemporary
"folk" communities in the UK and US in a really interesting and
sophisticated way.

Therese,
Regarding the creation of community around Sacred Harp singing, I would highly recommend Kiri Miller's book Traveling Home: Sacred Harp Singing and American Pluralism. She not only does a wonderful job of exploring the particularly types of sociality created by the "hollow square" formation, but she also grapples a bit with the "artificiality" of these communities, which you mentioned in your query. I hope this helps!

Peace,
Josh Busman
