Warning: This post is not for the beginner student of the internet,
this is for a little more advanced technique for people who have the
basic practices down.

As I probe deep into my personal hell I like to call SEO I sometimes
come across things that once used to be great at driving traffic and
now are a virtual No-No of SEO practices and vice versa so I have
decided to help you develop the thought process on how to approach
this ever changing hobby.

Part 1 of 3.

Depending on which engine you are optimizing for, obviously changes
which methods you use, but some methods tend to work better than
others. Content is king and we have been pushing that idea for years
now but then you have to ask yourself how can so many gigantic sites
implement primarily flash based content and have virtually no content
on index pages at all. The answer as most of us know is the sheer
amount of traffic that is sent to those sites usually because of many
thousands of links from other sites and years of being online gaining
popularity. Then you have to ask yourself the question of how do you
get to the top and get near them or even pass them with a new site?
Can it be done? Can your simple techniques really get you to the top?
All of these questions have simple answers and they are all YES. But
to do this you must forget everything you know about SEO and start
looking at the results pages themselves and compare and contrast your
site to the guys that you are trying to reach. The reason I say that
this is not for the beginner SEO guru is because in order to actually
see the coded differences between your page and the pages you wish you
had you must know all the basic techniques and have the know-how to
recognize these traits.

Most search engines, "believe it or not" have a finite set of
parameters that they look for in their ranking algorithms but the
problem is that those algorithms are what are changing, not the rules
that govern them. Learning to recognize these simple rules is the key
to what I like to call ETIQUETTE OPTIMIZATION which is simply
following the rules and the results instead of following the procedure
of results. Confused yet? Don't worry, it's not that tough. Basically
what I am trying to show you guys and soon enough I will have evidence
is that if you look at your competition, I mean really look at it with
an intelligent eye you will see how and why every single site got to
where they are today. Sometimes the traditional SEO techniques are not
what you need to do in order to get to where you want. In certain
conditions and on certain result pages you will see that the top 10
results are not given to sites that have proper seo technique and the
actual page it self has learned this with its calls of searches and
has "adapted" to become used to those kind of postings. Sounds a
little silly to think of a search engine can literally change the type
of results it chooses to display but that goes back to the idea of the
changing algorithms and not the changing rules.

How to Combat This?

Allowing your mind to slip away from standard SEO practices and start
to really take a close look to your results page is the only way to
truly get above those guys. You will see once in a while a mistake
that they made regarding Alt Tags or Content Placement that you can
simply fix in order to overtake their placement but you truly must
understand the concepts of SEO before attempting this etiquette
optimization. Maybe having your primary keyword 12 times in your text
is bad if the top 10 results only have it 2-5 times. Comparative
thinking is the only way I have found to truly get to the top. Maybe
having your keyword in your title is a bad thing? Sounds funny right?
Keeping your main key phrase in your title document has always been on
the forefront of all basic optimization techniques but using today's
increasingly advanced engines you must stop looking at the simple
rules and start looking at the results page it self. If they don't
have it, maybe you shouldn't either.

I pose a question

Is there over-optimization?

Please let me know what you think of this post and expect the part 2
within a few days.

PS: tossed up a site to launch my new product, I know I know it's a
front pager with some content, but I threw it up quickly , let me know
what you think.

Darren, I agree with you and think this is right approach. I am
working on optimizing my website but struggling due to reasons you
mentioned above. I ahve right keyword density of around 7% and don't
have repeated keywords in title and keyword tag. But still my site
appears on google at page 34 :(

when i looked at top page in search, it doesn't ahev even that keyword
in title tag. That make me agree with what you say. I would have to
say you thanks. i don't knwo yet results but for sure will try what
you said.
