Our Sierra Club group will have a presence at Metro Justice's Alternative Fair on Dec. 4th and 5th. This Fair offers dozens of vendors selling... yes, "alternative" holiday gifts, including fair trade and organic locally produced food, clothing, pottery, games, art, and more. See for more info:

The Sierra Club Rochester Regional Group is sponsoring
"Wild Utah: America's Redrock Wilderness" is a multi-media slideshow documenting citizen efforts to designate public lands in southern Utah's spectacular canyon country as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. This 20-minute journey through redrock splendor invigorates and motivates viewers to participate in the movement to protect these unique lands.

The November meeting of the Rochester Area Vegetarian Society will include a GREAT speaker: Rae Sikora. Rae will speak on "Falling in Love with the Planet." Rae Sikora, with her husband Jim Corcoran, is a founder of Plant Peace Daily, which "provides individuals on the path of nonviolence and cruelty-free living with the information and tools needed to be a powerful force for peace." Quite simply, Rae is one of the most engaging and inspiring speakers we have ever heard. Please don't miss this opportunity to hear her, tell your friends about it, and bring them along! We just received this announcement - we hope you can tune in to 60 Minutes tonight.
Over the summer, the Appalachian Voices Watauga Riverkeeper crew has been working with 60 Minutes to do an investigative story about coal ash waste. We are happy to report that the show will air this Sunday, October 4, 2009. The 60 Minutes crew will provide the public with an overview or a "coal ash 101? report. It comes in the wake of the 1 billion gallon TVA coal ash spill that occurred in December of 2008 in Harriman, Tennessee.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3rd the Roch. Sierra Club is holding its annual FALL FESTIVAL. It looks as if the weather will cooperate! This year the program will focus on Rochester's land preservation movement and how our city has come to have so many beautiful parks. Guest speaker, Larry Champoux has assembled a slide show using great early photographs of Rochester, particularly photos of the Cobbs Hill Park area - the old canal and the old bridge over it on Culver Rd., the old boat factory (current site of the Armory) and photos showing the construction of the reservoir. There will also be a guided hike through Washington Grove at Cobb's Hill. Come learn about how the Grove got its name, why the old oaks could disappear and invasive Norway maples could take over if nothing is done to change things.

(see details in email of 6/24/09) Please contact Senator Schumer and ask him to STOP SUPPORTING this irresponsible project. We suggest sending letters as the way to have the greatest impact, but any method of contacting him is better than nothing.

We just received notice of a barn festival happening in Ontario County THIS Saturday, Sept. 5th. If you are interested in SOLAR ENERGY and SUSTAINABILITY you won't want to miss this. It features live bluegrass, roots and alternative music, great BBQ, arts & crafts and free ice cream and face painting for kids.
