The November meeting of the Rochester Area Vegetarian Society will include a GREAT speaker: Rae Sikora. Rae will speak on "Falling in Love with the Planet." Rae Sikora, with her husband Jim Corcoran, is a founder of Plant Peace Daily, which "provides individuals on the path of nonviolence and cruelty-free living with the information and tools needed to be a powerful force for peace." Quite simply, Rae is one of the most engaging and inspiring speakers we have ever heard. Please don't miss this opportunity to hear her, tell your friends about it, and bring them along! As for the dinner, this November meeting always has a "Thanksgiving" feel, with the food providing delicious vegan versions of holiday favorites.

We just received this announcement - we hope you can tune in to 60 Minutes tonight.
Over the summer, the Appalachian Voices Watauga Riverkeeper crew has been working with 60 Minutes to do an investigative story about coal ash waste. We are happy to report that the show will air this Sunday, October 4, 2009. The 60 Minutes crew will provide the public with an overview or a "coal ash 101? report. It comes in the wake of the 1 billion gallon TVA coal ash spill that occurred in December of 2008 in Harriman, Tennessee.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3rd the Roch. Sierra Club is holding its annual FALL FESTIVAL. It looks as if the weather will cooperate! This year the program will focus on Rochester's land preservation movement and how our city has come to have so many beautiful parks. Guest speaker, Larry Champoux has assembled a slide show using great early photographs of Rochester, particularly photos of the Cobbs Hill Park area - the old canal and the old bridge over it on Culver Rd., the old boat factory (current site of the Armory) and photos showing the construction of the reservoir. There will also be a guided hike through Washington Grove at Cobb's Hill. Come learn about how the Grove got its name, why the old oaks could disappear and invasive Norway maples could take over if nothing is done to change things.

(see details in email of 6/24/09) Please contact Senator Schumer and ask him to STOP SUPPORTING this irresponsible project. We suggest sending letters as the way to have the greatest impact, but any method of contacting him is better than nothing.
