Let's see...
An Event Apart has 3 speakers and a mystery guest. One day. No
parties. Free wifi: $500.
SXSW 2007 has all the same speakers and many, many more (including Dan
Rather). Lasts 4 days. Has crazy parties 'till the wee hours. Also
free wifi: $225.

I think I know which one I'm going to.

Dan Rather's at SXSW? Ugh. Courage, Dan. ;-)

Justin, I like your math.

Hey! Dan Rather is a pretty cool dude, I'm interested in seeing him
speak at such an intimate venue. At least they're changing it up a
little bit. Passionate users. Again? That's an ugh for sure.

True. It needs a changeup. But Dan? Just not a fan of his. We used to
raz him back in J-school. Gunga Dan.

Not sure what he's got to offer a group of technologists. I guess
Berners-Lee or Woz are out of the picture?

You guys are spamming us with this chatter. Refresh-Austin is a great
group and I would like to continue receiving useful information, but
email management is becoming unbearable.

Please consider emailing each other directly with your personal stuff.
Thanks a bunch.

I, on the other hand, enjoy the social Web-geekery :)

Please, keep it coming!

Happy times, all around.

Both are right. Social geekery is always good, but, like all things,
moderation is key. I think it's best if we keep the chatting geekery
to a minimum; speaking as one guilty of past excesses.

Anyone want to preview anything for tonight's meeting? Sam, any
"homework" for us to do before the meeting?

I'm with you on the one-liner replies being to much like "chatter",
but it's a fine line between keeping messages clear and concise vs.
having a virtually dead list. Compared to what this list was about 3
months ago, we're abound with activity now and I love it.

Homework? Not especially. The meeting will work best if *everyone*
brings something though. So just think about what you've seen or used
recently that might be of interest. This isn't a who is most wired
kind of contest. Frequently old-school and low tech ideas need to get
recycled. What works for you? Gizmos, life-hacks, anecdotes, whatever
- all fair game.

For my part, I have a list of things I want to share - just the stuff
that I've had someone look over my shoulder in the past and say hey
whats that? That stuff that individually is maybe just cute, but in
aggregate improves quality of life.
So, I've got: slickwords, screen calipers, charles, fiddler, platypus.
There's a theme there - dev/productivity tools. But if we all just
bring something new/cool/useful the diversity of the group should make
for a head-spinning evening.

If we have good turnout, we should focus on making it around the
group, and leave in-depth discussion for later on the list.

I'll tell you...I want to go to "An Event Apart" soooo much! I'm going to see if my boss will spring for it.

Why is "An Event Apart" important? Because as wild and wonderful as SXSW is...I want the intimacy of "An Event Apart". A smaller, more focused conference...with NO PANELS. Panels are cool at SXSW...but listening and interacting with the brilliant minds of Zeldman, Meyer and Santa Maria is priceless.

And honestly....during SXSW...I got to hand with Jason...but I was way to drunk to learn anything from him!

So...I'll pony up my money even if my boss won't spring for "An Event Apart"...because...it is indeed...worth every penny to me.

(and I'll see y'all at SXSW as well!)
