Geia sou Kavoura, paraponiari...
Hi Nikos, I would not believe there is any important reason hiding behind Kavouras nickname. He says it to himself. Paraponiaris is a word we give, in certain cases, to people we like. It is a tender word creating positive feelings. Kavouras was a beloved guy. The fact that he calls himself like that can be seen both as a suitable "movement"... more »

pono, de me lypasai (2)
Thanks, Nikos, Dave and Tiffany for your kind words. Nikos, you translated the song much better than me! The only thing I was wondering is the habbit we have to translate certain words with their parallel English words. For example, κούκλα μου, is almost always translated as my doll, though I would propose my babe, my... more »

In Honour of markos
Geia sas, Well, it's that time of year again, the 103rd anaversary of the birth of Markos Vamvakaris. So as a little treat, here are two speaking clips of him. I know of no others that have been released to the public except a tiny one on "Markos the Minister". I've also included one of his earliest recordings and two from when he was older. the... more »

Found the Book!
Geia sas, Well, after searching high and low and bothering just about everyone, Spiros and I found "Λεξικό Τις Πιάτσας" Lexiko Tis Piatsas. The only thing is that they have three different versions. We crossed out the one with slang from the last 40 years cause it's much too new, but... more »

"Araber tanz"- Greek version
Hi everyone, Some time ago I posted a query about "Araber Tanz" which prompted an interesting discussion-but we didn't find out the original Greek melody. Anyway, the query was originally posted on another list, and today there was a comprehensive reply. So, for anyone interested in the connections between klezmer and rebetiko, here it is.... more »
