orry if this is old to some. Skip it if you wish. Figured since there
are a large number of people here, maybe, one of you could help. You
might just have that grandfather or great uncle you forgot about or
something. Maybe, someone new here doesn't know about my search. In
any case, this is a New York Craigslist posting I put up today and is
a much shortened version of the old ones..
"Help Make a Dream Come True: Seeking A Mangas/rebetis (Greek music)
About Me: 24-years-old, love authentic rebetika. Play trichordo and
baglama (self-taught) Totally blind but can arrange for transportation
if close to NY/NJ. Still learning Greek but have someone to translate
if necessary.

Seeking: Genuine mangas and/or rebetis. Over 80, was in Piraeus in the
30's/40's. does not need to be musician or singer, but does need to
have known other manges or perhaps some rebetes. Knows
koutsavakika/mangiko. If he can't remember much or doesn't want to
talk about his life that's ok. I just want to meet/speak with one
before it's too late. Descendents and magkises also welcomed. I will
give my phone number if requested.

Feel free to email me or message me at any of these.
msn: scholar1983 @ hotmail . com
AIM Tiffanitsa
Skype Therebetisa
Google Talk tiffanitsa @ gmail . com

Efharisto kai geia sas."

As a sidenote, I'm not expecting wonderful health here. His memory
might be totally shot altogether, though I obviously hope not. At
this point, even being in the same room with one would be great.
Also, I think there are a few descendents here. I'd love to hear your
stories offlist if you don't think they're appropriate for the group.
Contact me if you can. If you know no one but can suggest places
(online or off) where I can look for one, please do so. lol And
please don't sing the train song or tell me to go to the cemetary.

Thanks,
Tiffanitsa

...I fear for you...I don't think the type of Manga your are searching for follows craigslist and the type of manga that would respond to such an add may be a little suspect...maybe you can find a true manga through GAFS http://www.emoreiro.com/GAFS/ ...I am sure that someone in that society can point you in the right direction...good luck

let me know if it did. In any case, I just emailed them, so we'll see

Excuse me for being such a square but I don't follow... why is
everyone looking for a "manga?"

Because it would be amazing to speak with one, to learn what he knows,
to hear about his life and maybe to hear stories of the rebetes that
you can't find in books. It's not like it was in the 60's or even in
the 70's, where you could find a few old ones still living. Today,
you have to look high and low. I was born in 1983 so missed out on
almost everyone. The last real rebetis and mangas I know of from that
time was Iordanis Tsomidis and he died about two years ago. So our
best hope is to find a mangas who wasn't in the music scene.

Tiffany, listen to what Dimmitri say in the intro... He basically says that the modern musicians playing the old "mangika" tragoudia do not have the same instinct/perspective that they had. It is impossible without having lived in that tumultuous time. The only thing we can do is to play those songs with respect and to the best of our abilities. The true Manges you seek are gone. The term mangas and the people that call themselves manges today have changed from what it meant originally. This is my opinion of course...good luck in your quest thought...cya

As I said, I'm not necessarily seeking a musician, just someone who
lived the life style. I'm sure there is at least one of those around,
somewhere in the world. The trick is finding him before he
disappears. As I said, descendents also interest me and I know they
can be found. After all, I did get to speak with Stelios Vamvakaris.
*smile* I'm just praying that this organisation emails me back with
something, preferably positive..

Sorry if I were negative. But even in Stelio Vamvakaris' case, even he is not a mangka, only the son of one, although I am sure that he grew up amongst many of the great ones. Like I said before, good luck to you kiddo... Does anyone know if Papaioannou's son is still alive? How old would he be know? what is that part of town next to faliro were all the famous tekedes were?

This is funny, cause I'm about to try and put a video (audio as a .mov
file) on youtube about this and just got your message. And it's ok.
It's just the truth, that's all. However, I'd also like to hear from
descendents of manges, their wives or even magkises or rebetises
(though the latter are even rarer than the manges). In any case, I'm
sure all would have interesting things to say. If no one here beats
me to it, I'll ask Spiros about that part of town and see what he says
and also if he might know about Papaioannou's son as well.

Andoni (?) Papaioannou perfomred on the tv show KOITA TI EKANES -
Tribute to Grigori Bithikotsi (great episode), I beleive not long
before Grigori passed away. How long ago was that (my memory is
shocking) ? Andoni looked younger than Stelio Vamvakari

I still find the term magka confusing. Today, someone who portrays
strong character traits is a magka, won;t back down from adversity,
firm but fair and a bit on the cool sirde is a magka... But even from
Marko's book, I got that impression from the way he would describe
magkes - funnily, I noticveed enough time when Marko himself would
talk about himself and the magkes... the magkes that would frequent
his cafene/magazi... the magles that would be at the tekedes that he
would frequent etc......

Congrats on the Vamvakari souvenier too - your onw peice of history

Fabian, you are probably talking of the Piraeus Peninsula, Πειραϊκή
χερσόνησος, simply named Peiraiki. It then was an uninhabited rocky
place with caves etc. The spilia tou Drakou etc. all were there.

Ni Nikos,
what is Spilia tou Drakou? There was a famous bouzouki nightclub in
Astoria New York called "Spilia", but I never made the connection to
the idea of the mangas hanging out in caves!

*smile* Ooh, a new place to learn about. Is it still there? Do any
of the old places still exist? Not the tekes of course, but the
caves. I mean, can people still go in them?

Spilia = cave & tou Drakou means Drakou's (Drakous cave)

Marko clearly talks aout taking to the hills to smoke as magkes did a
lot. He alos used to go up & practricsae a lot on both baglama &
bouzouki with Strato Pagoumtzis ast those same hills. I thought I
read discussion about it here also...

Marko told of one story when he oversmoked up at a cave/hill on his
own, & feeling sick, dragged himself up to a nother spot where other
magkes wehre smoking, who upon seeing him thuoght about jumping him
for his new suit & shoes..

On the Bithikotsi tribute, they were talking about Papaioannou & can't
remember going up for day s at a time, coming down for a quick wash &
something to eat at a local hotel before going back up again for
daysjsut to play & practise music

That sounds totally incredible, being there with friends who love
music and not being bothered by anyone, able to practise as much as
you want and get encouragement from those around you. This is exactly
the kind of thing I'm hoping to find when I meet a manga, stories and
recallections that you can't always find in books.

Thanks,

Dave, spilia is just - cave. Spilia tou Drakou (Dragon's cave) is
famous because it's mentioned in one Batis song (zoula se mia varka
bika, sti spilia tou Drakou vgika etc.) The name spilia was en mode
some decades ago, as a name for a night club (any night club), I don't
think there was any connection between Dragon's cave and the New York
bouzouki club.

Thanks for the info Nikos,
I didn't mean a connection between the club and the Dragon's Cave
specifically, but that the idea of a night club being named "cave"
must be a reference to the mangas hanging out in caves...or is there
another reason night clubs would be using the name cave?

cheers,
dave

I think there may have been a famous band that played at "The Cavern"

lol Well, i did it.

The video probably sucks, and it's only in English, but anyway.
Hopefully, it'll work out and someone will answer with something
positive. I can't do anymore other than going directly to Greece and
searching there. In the meantime, it's back to my Greek and bouzouki
lessons. As a funny sidenote, one of the newspapers I wrote to
actually sent a note to Grigoris Maninakis about me, figuring he could
help. When he wrote to me about it, I had a good laugh, cause we'd
already discussed this in the past. My next step is to cross my
fingers and call Gale Holst Warhaft, now that I got her number at
Cornell off the net. If anyone's already asked something similar and
she said no, please tell me so I don't disturb this woman. She's kind
of a pillar in our community and I'd hate to annoy her with this
without cause.

I can see no ways of editing an already sent message. Anyway: I am
sure Gail (mind the spelling) will listen to you carefully and try to
help but it is definite that she cannot bring back the people you are
