Hello everyone,

My name is Bobby and I play old style rebetika on and old style
bouzouki. I am completely obsessed and am in love with rebetika and
want nothing more than to start a rebetika band or just hang out and
play with others. I'm pretty serious about this music, I used to play
gigs in Texas before I moved here to New York recently. I have played
for non-greek audiences mostly and the music was very well received.
But I've had problems finding anyone who knows anything about greek
music until I found this group. I was wondering if any of you fine
people could help me.

Thank you

Sorry Bobby, I 'm a bit too far away for a session together... On
anything else, I can gladly help!

Geia sou Bobby,

I've been wanting to respond for awhile, but things got in the way.
Anyway, I know you play bouzouki, but would you be willing to teach as
well? Do you know the dromoi? Sorry for asking such a basic
question, but some players do and some don't. I'm actually looking
for a teacher right now who's willing to work at an affordable price.
the last one charged $50 an hour (one lesson per week) and played
tetrachordo! In any case, I'd still like to get to know you and to
chat about rebetika. Btw, I'm in New Jersey. Maybe, if there are
enough of us in the area, we can all meet up for coffee and music.
Oh, and before I forget, I'm also looking for a toumbeleki instructor
or at least some tips. Can anyone help me?

Talk soon,
Tiffanitsa

Me? Play? Maybe, if I got over my "am I doing it right" fear (which
I only have with bouzouki/baglama) and my procrastination (which I
have with everything) I'd actually become a better player. Sadly, I
can play keyboard far better than bouzouki, which is pretty much
useless in true rebetika. I can pick out almost any melody with it's
correct key and am very good with rhythm, but this is all by ear. I
don't know the notes passed the basics and want to learn them the
Greek/European way in any case.
