Geia sas,

A friend gave me this link and I had to share it with you. I think
everyone will enjoy this one. *smile* Even Google does a somewhat ok
translation of it, once you get used to it.

I wish that the autobiography of Markos Vamvakaris could be put up,
even if it's not translated. I think I could get by with reading it
this way and then fill in the gaps as my knowledge of the language
progresses.
Have fun,
Tiffanitsa

This article says Markos left Syros and went to Peirea at the age of 12.... I don't think that is correct - he was a bit older when he went, was he not?  Maybe 18 or so?  I don't remember exactly, but age 12 sounds like its wrong...

I've heard 12 and 15 as possible ages. But if this was taken from the
actual biography, I see no reason why it shouldn't be true. However,
I do agree that 12 seems a bit young.

His autobiography (written by Angelika Keil I know) quotes it as 12
years old as well and ome of the text reminds me of the biography whic
I have upstairs and remember reading, maybe I shouls re read it for
myself ! and also quote it here - of course anyone who has a "O AGIOS
MAGKAS" by Stelio Bambakari can tell us if there is a different story
also..

twele years old SHOULD sound too young to us (and most families before
us!) ! I

"1917, I was 13 years old. No person could tell me I was not an
outright man" (!). That's when he "escaped" to Piraeus. Kounadis
notes, the date should be questionned, it's much too early. I
wouldn't think so, other times...

Ok, another question for Stelios. That poor man is gonna kill me by
the time I call him again! As for typos, no one's perfect. *smile*

In response to the other post, If I remember correctly, he said that
he started smoking mavro at around 17, which is understandable. But
someone gave me this link yesterday.

It's not directly related to rebetika, but it did bring a few
questions to mind. How old were the youngest people in the tekes and
the tavernas back then? I don't mean by law, but in actuality.
Surely, even the manges would say "you're too young/go home" at a
certain point.

The age at which a working-class boy was supposed to start working
full time for a living (as an apprentice if learning a trade, or just
working if not) was generally 11-12. Approximately the same age as in
the West. That is one reason all primary schools end towards age 11.
Once you started making a living and you visibly had started puberty,
there should be no reason for refusing entry in bars. That would place
the age at 13-14 approximately, depending on the external maturity.

Hi,

(an unexpected answer...)

It has been a long time I wanted to comment your simple and ,at the same time, very interesting question. As much as I know, nobody has wondered before. I'm going to write about this topic and publish even photos in my blog elkibra-rebetiko.blogspot.com. I will let you know the day I post it.

Many regards

Elkibra (Kostas Ladopoulos)

Hmmm. Reading over the previous messages. So setting the last year
of a teke at around 1937, strictly by law, the youngest mangas to
remember a teke would be around 84. But since we all know that they
existed even after the ban, in order to still have that prewar
experience, one could be 81. I'd always set my search at 80 and up,
just for interest sake, so it looks like I wasn't that far off. This
means I have a much better chance at finding one. Sure, they won't
have the same experience as someone in their 90's and up, but they
still had a long time in which to mingle with the rebetes, considering
that most died in the 60's and 70's. So they could talk about them
when they were older. Now, if only I could find one! *smile*

Happy,
Tiffanitsa
