PFUJ condemns Quetta rally attack, seeks steps for safety of journalists

ISLAMABAD, Sept 3: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the suicide attack, followed by indiscriminate firing on an Al-Quds day rally, organized by the Imamia Students Organisation (ISO),  at Meezan Chowk Quetta in which more than 50 people were killed and over 102 injured.

A Driver of Aaj T.V. DSNG Muhammad Sarwar was also died due to blast-cum-firing, while Muhammad Shahid Cameraman of  Express T.V, Muhammad Imran, DawnNews cameraman Fateh Shakir,  GEO Cameraman, Muhammad Ijaz, SAMA Cameraman, Noor Elahi Bugti, Reporter SAMA TV and Mustafa Tareen, Reporter GEO TV, and some other representatives of different media houses who had been covering the rally were also injured.

Expressing concern over such sorrow state of affairs prevailing in Balochistan, the PFUJ said the incident had again proved that media men are working in hostile conditions without any security or protection, and they easily fall pray to such incidents.

The PFUJ said that incidents of blasts, firings  have become order of the day in various parts of the country, especially in Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa,  Punjab and in tribal areas in which a number of journalists have seriously been injured while about 8 have already lost their lives while 14 reporters and cameramen have suffered injuries while performing their professional assignments after the 9/11 incident in Pakistan.

It may be noted that "on April 16, of this year  Samaa TV cameraman Malik Arif lost his life in a the suicide bombing at the Quetta hospital while five other journalists, Noor Elahi Bugti of Samaa TV, Salman Ashraf of Geo TV, Fareed Ahmed of Dunya TV, Khalil Ahmed of Express TV and Malik Sohail of Aaj TV injured.”

The PFUJ further contended that neither the media owners were careful about their legal obligation, nor the government was taking any notice of such types of incidents, in which lives of media persons are at stake.

The PFUJ pointed out that media persons were neither trained, nor any protective material given to them despite demands made by the PFUJ.

The PFUJ urged the government to take notice of the Quetta incident and provide compensation to the family of the deceased cameraman and injured journalists.

Moreover, selfishness, bias and unprofessional coverage  of the incident had once again exposed the true face of electronic media owners which can be judged from the fact that almost all channels mentioned only names of their dead /  injured cameramen, reporters, driver, or employee  and refrained form mentioning the names of the reporters or cameramen of other channels who were all equal human beings and had suffered serious injuries and died during coverage of the procession being a member of teem.

Commenting on this unprofessional approach of the media owners, the PFUJ said how can these channels claims themselves  to be fair in reporting when they have different yardsticks for various sections of human beings.

They are running the channels to inform the citizens  of factual events, who just for jealously or due to commercial interests were reluctant to refer the name of the other channels despite the fact that was most important part of the incident.

This act is highly deplorable and regrettable, the PFUJ said.

The PFUJ termed the incident a shameful act of terrorism which reflected inhuman and callous nature of perpetrators. The journalist community is taking the incident as an attack on media, the PFUJ said.

The PFUJ cautioned that if media owners did not provide security to media persons, the PFUJ would be compelled to seek registration of criminal cases against them for ignoring their responsibilities towards their employees.

The Quetta incident reinforces calls for greater security training for TV journalists in particular and new SOP on part of cable TV news channels to protect their people on ground. We need to make it happen sooner than later.

Khattak sb I agree with you. Friday incident proved that our colleagues in Quetta refrain from undertaking precautionary measures while covering sensitive events.

Quetta carnage is yet another eye-opener for our rulers. It is also unfortunate to mention that as many people including our media fellows either died or got serious injuries because of the indiscriminate firing on the part of the rally participants. Mere changes of one or two police officers won't deliver. On the other hand our man in-charge of the home-security says that no open gatherings should be held. Is it a greater jail called Pakistan?

I think cable news channels should immediately come up with SOP to help others avoidbeing caught by such situation. Otherwise, more injuries and death will come to our colleagues.
Let's pray for the wounded journalists in Quetta and wish them got well soon.

Tarin is a very energetic and dedicated media man. During my tenure as Director Public Relations Balochistan and later as Press Secretary to Chief Minister, I always found him in action, covering any event or happening anywhere across the largest province of the country. Besides, his reportings have been found based on facts and unbiased. His condition requires that we all pray for his early recovery.
It is also a matter of concern that the political and in particular the religious gatherings are getting more violent and fully armed. What happened with the law enforcement personnel and fire brigade staff in Lahore and high-handed dealing of media people in Quetta warrant wide condemnation. Notwithstanding the suicide bombing many other precious souls were the victim of indiscriminate firing by the unruly mob.

Dear  Salman Iqbal "

this is quiet strange that in reply of PFUJ below email you are showing yourself very much sincere regarding your staff and you felt sadness that PFUG didn’t mentioned ARY staffers name in email, you might  wholly haven’t seen the email because in that email your Quetta staffer Mustafa and cameraman  EJAZ name is included in the email,” updating” it may be mentioned here as well that your cameraman in Quetta Ejaz just left your channel and joined SAMAA TV as he failed to get his salary since last three months and second the main reason I am replying to this email is to lengthen your real face among the media body, beside your all those dramatic replies in which you are managing to hide your real face from those which are fighting for the rights of working journalists in Pakistan..

I would like to draw the attention of respective high-ups of PFUJ , that pay their attention to the following facts,

(1)  That CEO ARY Digital Network Mr. Salman Iqbal fired more then 100 staffers in his channel ARY news without any notice, in recent days and in his official communication he forced his other more then 120 staffers to tendered resignation which t is matter of great concern neither for those which are doing this and also for those as well which are fighting the journalists rights that they haven’t took any action into the matter..

(2)  In previous email PFUJ demanded the owners of media high-ups to pay the salaries to journalists before EID-ul-Fitr but    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  but here the situation IN ARY NEWS is quiet different MR. Salman Iqbal being a sympathic Boss is killing its staffers economically all his best.

(3)  Hundreds of ARY NEWS staffers round the country haven’t get the salary of past three months and it’s a routine job, His channel is paying staffers one month salary sharp after three months especially in this holly month of Ramadan since three months most staffers of ARY news were out of salary and few days back after three months they were paid the salary of the Month of June.

(4)  And it should also be kept in mind that its not the first exercise of Salman Iqbal ,due to them the whole media community  felt humiliation that at one side it is continuously fighting against dictatorial rules and its by-products like the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), one of the cronies of top man sitting at the capital hill top, Haji Abdul Razzaq of ARY NEWS uncle of Mr Isalman Iqbal, is also among the beneficiaries of the atrocious and notorious NRO ordinance. According to documents available with The News, in the scam of plundering of billions of rupees of the Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB), cases of buddies of the top man – Hussain Lawai and Haji Abdul Razzaq – were closed under the NRO after four months of the promulgation of the notorious law. Both the cases against Lawai and Haji Razzaq were criminal in nature and thus were closed/disposed of by the Special Court (Offences in Banks) on August 19, 2008, on the recommendation of a federal review board which was given on June 26, 2008

Hope it is enough for the real face of those which are making their black money white using their TV channels like Salman Iqbal etc

I will keep continue to disclose more in next email

By brother Shakeel, I would suggest that apart from addressing the issue to PFUJ, you should simply write an application to Chief
Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of the high handedness of the channel for which he had spared five hours of the court
proceedings while taking the case of blockade of its transmission.

One could imagine, how the court was deeply interested in resolving the issue by reprimanding the PEMRA authorities during the
proceedings of the case, ignoring  other litigants, present in the courtroom, since morning, waiting for their turn of cases.

The Chief Justice must be informed that the sympathies. he had extended to the channel in the case should also now take notice
of the injustice, being meted out by the channel to its workers as well.

Dear Shams-ul-Islam Naz

Reference your press release about the payment of the dues of the employees of different news organization I just want to make it clear that all dues of the employees of ARY News have been cleared for the month of June and July 2010 and hopefully salaries for the month of August 2010 will be dispersed before Eid.

Some people are using these blog for academic purposes and some are misusing for mud slugging to others. I am agreeing with my honorable colleague Aimal Khan that these blog should not be used for abusing senior journalists like Rahimullah Yousafzai. A.W. Yousafi, Shaukat Khattak, Ayaz Badshah and others.

ARY has neither fired dozens of  staff members nor more than hundred  resigned. A  well know trade unionist and former Secretary General of PFUJ is  very much in ARY News besides other senior journalists.
