Subject: Medication Questions
*Cross-posted from Ferret Health List*

Question about 2 of my ferrets meds:

"Maggie" has insulinoma and has been taking prednisilone for many
months now (she is too old to be a surgical candidate @ around 7
perhaps plus years). It is still working more or less, though
sometimes we give it to her 3x instead of 2x a day, but she has the
classic med signs now with a "pred" belly, reddish skin and thinning
fur. It seems Pred (in it's various formulations) is about the only
thing I have found to keep the insulinoma in check. I'd like to give
her a break from it and wondering if anyone here knows of
alternatives?

"Legolas" has adrenal (and had the right removed). Left was also
showing signs of adrenal but in check so far. Before surgery he was
having issues urinating, and also some blood in his urine. Vet did not
find any problems to account for that (other then of course the usual
issue with adrenal causing enlarged prostate). He had surgery perhaps
in July and is doing fine however he still has some blood in urine and
continues to only pee a small amount (both of which are better then
what he was doing pre-surgery). He doesn't seem to strain or try to go
repeatly anymore so it is better but still less than normal. He has
been on various drugs to little avail (clavamox, flutimide, something
else which I forget but in same line as clavamox, and now on
finasteride). Guess that was the background. The question is does
anyone know if can give flutamide/finasteride sorta togetheher (1 one
day, the other next day) and if there are any long term worries with
either? Also, I don't really understand dosing - but read article in
Ferrets Magazine that says:

"The suggested dose is 1 milligram once a day for the first 30 days.
After the first 30 days, the dose can usually be reduced to just one
tenth of a milligram once a day."

Errr, how do I translate from his current dose of 2 MG/ML @ 0.5 ML
1x/day - he wasn't on the "suggested" dose of 1 milligram (or is 0.5
ML equal to 1 milligram?) and it has long since been past 30 days. I'm
just giving him 0.1 ML now, which seems to keep his issues in check
just as well as the 0.5 ML. Is he stuck on this for life? It makes me
nervous and worried about them if they have to take drugs every day
(but of course they may "need" too).

Thank for your thoughts everyone.
