Subject: How To Tell If Your Ferret Is Deaf And Training Deaf Ferrets
It looks like it's been pretty dead in here, so I'm hesistant about
whether or not this post will get a response. But I'm going to try
anyways, and if gets a few discussions going, then I guess it's worth
it.

I'm interested in learning a little bit more about deaf ferrets (or
better yet, how to tell for sure if a ferret is deaf). We have two
little fuzzies, one of which we are about 100% certain that he is deaf
(Odo, 1 yr) and another that we are trying to determine (Loki, 6
mths). Odo doesn't respond to any noises whatsoever and never has. The
only way we can surprise him is by stomping our feet or sneaking up on
him when he is busy with something. Loki is the one that we're not
quite sure. We can't tell if maybe he's just ignoring us most of the
time (he's still a baby), if he's partially deaf, or if he's totally
deaf. We read about some of the warning signs (white head, excessive
vocalization, etc) and he fits a lot of them. Does anyone know of
tests or any other ways to tell for sure if our little guy is deaf or
just a regular "kid"?

We also are interested in trying to train our little guys to do
tricks. Odo is already a master of rolling over, we just want to teach
him to do it on command. This is the one that we know is deaf and are
at a loss as to how to go about training him. Once again, any ideas or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

~~EricaLynn~~

I always used squeeky toys. I never met a hearing ferret that wouldn't react to
one.

As far as training them to do tricks, they can learn hand signals just like
hearing ferrets learn voice commands.
