Does the white noise in the sleep tracks actually help to sleep?

I'm experiencing insomnia on a monophasic schedule right now and am thinking of listening to the mp3 to help myself fall asleep.

I don't know. I used to experience very mild insomnia though, so I
took Simply Sleep (Diphendyramine. It's basically Tylenol PM without
the Tylenol) and that worked wonders. It's OTC, non-habit forming, and
got me back to solid sleeping in a week.

I made the polynap mp3's, but I don't experience insomnia, so I can't really say.
It certainly helps me fall asleep though :)

Other tricks :
- Keep repeating the word 'the' to calm your mind
- It's easier to relax muscles by flexing them. So start with your toes and work your way up your body, flexing and relaxing
- To help sleep paralysis and mind, focus on your feet, then imagine they're really heavy. Move up your body till you get to your head.

There's some other tricks, but I'm less certain of them, so I'll not post about those.
But I hope these help :)

I live by a white noise track. I don't use Greg's but instead a custom
one I made on my own, with my alarm clock sound.
It's a little sad seeing the play counts on my ipod, as it's in first
place by at least 100 times the next most often played song. Using it
for about 300 days will do that.

I also see it as vital depending on where you sleep. I work at the
airport, so when I tried to nap there, I needed the white noise track
to drown out the planes. If there is any amount of noise in the area
you are trying to sleep, I recommend a white noise track.
