We are embarking on reconditioning the portlights and quite a number of the original dogs ( black backlight bonded to a bronze nut ) are not serviceable.  I'm wondering what people have done to replace these and where they can be found??

Hi Ted,
I found your blog, but couldn't find an email, so I'll try to get you here. Congrats on Adesso, she is looking great and welcome to the POA. There are 2 new 47 owners, you guys and a center cockpit renamed Larabeck by the new owners who I have been in contact with. John Warren and I have made an informal list of 47's that we knew of over the last couple of years, so it's great to be able to fill in some blanks. We have Outbound, hull # 2 which is in San Francisco.

Anyway, to my question. I have read your blog post about replacing your port lights and am interested as mine either need replacing or rebuilding. After taking one lens apart to see how difficult replacing the glass would be, I'm leaning towards replacing over rebuilding as I think the cost/effort will be comparable. What sizes did you end up going with? Mine seem to be in between the NFM 513 and 615. I'm assuming you went bigger and cut bigger holes. How did that work out in the forward head where the cabin sides get shorter? Do the dogs hit the teak handrail?

Thanks,
Kenyon Stewart

Actually, I just noticed that there is a 4x14 in the Extended Spigot series for which I don't see any dimensions, but based on the others should be the closest.

Kenyon,

I'm delighted to know that you and John Warren have been accumulating
information on P47s. I decided a few days ago that, because there
don't seem to be very many P47s, I would be able to add that series
to my database, which will now cover P37, P40, P41, P42 (original
series), P43, and P47. If you wouldn't object to sending it to me,
I'd be most grateful to receive a copy of the list you've been developing.

And, while you're at it, I'd be quite pleased to receive the
following information about Outbound:
* Hull ID number
* Your contact information
* USCG Documentation number
* Any other information about Outbound that you'd like recorded in
the database.

Ted, the same information about Adesso would be much appreciated.

John, I'll make the same request to you for information about Warren Peace.

Many thanks!!
Jim

You can find the exact match (size, spigot length, and slope) for the port lights at Manship. Manship supplied the original on many of the Passports that I have seen although the bronze ones are no longer made by Manship, only the 316SS port lights. You can easily get them exported from China using Marine Depot in Chico California, the DeFever dealer. The price for the new ones from China will be about the same price needed to redo the old ones... See http://www.whitewatermh.com/ and contact Elizabeth in
Chico (Marine Depot US). With the original Manship units, at least on China Doll, these were direct drop-in replacements with no need to modify the existing openings.

I believe that the originals on my boat wer made by Grand Deer which also made the thru hulls.  I have found images for the Grand Deer catalog and the portlights look the same.  Grand Deer is defunct, I don't know if their line was picked up by Manship or they had Knocked off the Manship ones or what, but the Manship bronxe versions also look very much like mine.  Part of the reason why I think mine are Grand Deer is not only the pics from the catalog and thru hulls, but the overall quality, tolerances and variance.  The castings are not the greatest

I guess I should put a contact page up on our site. In the forward head it was a tight fit but went in no problem. NFM has my boat on file, all 4 x 14's except for the one in the cockpit. The dogs rest on the teak rail only in the head and and even then they are open so it is not a problem.  I will include my email and I can email pics if you want and I did learn install tricks so If you go ahead give me a call or email.

There is yet another P47 Royal Passport in LaPaz, Mexico at Costa Baja
Marina on C dock...ToTem The boat has been there for four or five years and
was for sale. When we were in LaPaz earlier this year we met with a boat
broker from Wagner's office in Annapolis that was trying to sell the boat
that week. They actually took it out for a sea trial, but I don't know the
end result of the sale. Could probably find out through Thom Wagner's
office what happened to ToTem.

John,

I believe (but am not certain!) that the 47' Royal Passports are
dubbed "Passport 470". Is that incorrect? It was my intent to
capture all (12?) of the "original" P47 boats in my database, but not
the more modern boats. There's only so much one guy can do!

Thanks,
Jim

That's OK Jim...I was just giving you some more info. There were originally
14 of the 47's built in the 1985 era. The other boat I mentioned is truly a
Royal Passport built probably in the 90's. My understanding...but not
sure...was that Wagner changed the name of the boats at some point and
called them Royal Passports...then at some point later dropped the Royal and
just became Passports again. However...I'm not totally sure about this.
Someone else probably has more knowledge about this than I do.

Take care....

John,

No problem; it's better to provide to much information than too little ;^)

Thanks for the info on total number of original P47s built.  Now that I know that, I can say that I have no information at all on three hull numbers: #6, #13, and #14.

Also, hull #3 is Pastime, which is currently for sale; see http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1984/Passport-Aft-cockpit-2303801/Holland/MI/United-States#.UbYQa_ZrOoU   However, the NOAA site (that allows searching by boat name or by USCG documentation number) that I frequently search for information about Passports does not have any information about a Passport named Pastime.  That suggests that P47 #3 is not documented, or was documented under a different name and the NOAA site hasn't been updated.  Sadly, those are the only two criteria by which searches are possible.

Thanks for your help!
   Jim

P.S., Any information that any members of the Passport group knows about P47 hulls #3, #13, and #14 will be greatly appreciated.
