Has anyone had any success in   getting new screens for the portholes for a Passport 40?

Thanks

Don't know about that, but do have a question about the screens. What is the purpose of the odd screw heads?  How does one loosen them? And why is there two screws on one side and one screw on the other?

And is it normal to have a gap around the screens?  Why did they do that and do folks have a solution for filling that gap?

Sorry to hijack the thread. But this is still a new boat to us.

Try a drop of your favorite penetrating oil on the threads of each
screw, then come back in 10-15 minutes. You might need pliers on the
screw heads, but it shouldn't take much force at all to move them. Two
on one side and one on the other to keep the screen from pivoting, I guess.

My screens do have a bit of a gap between them and the frame. You could
jam rolled-up gauze or screening or something in there, but the existing
mesh isn't small enough to keep jejenes (no-see-ems) out anyway. To
counter the jejenes/chitras/no-see-ems you either need to keep
everything sealed up and have air conditioning or burn mechas, the green
spirals, which are cheap, non-toxic, and effective. I put one mecha in a
pie tin under the chart table, and it keeps the main cabin and galley
bug free as long as it's burning.

We attached some thin gasket material around the edge of the portlights to fill that space. Those funny looking screws are impossible to replace. I broke several trying to remove them and am missing several. Will have to use bronze bolts with the same thread and file the ends to a point…

If you unscrew the bottom screw on the side with two screws you can
pivot the screen so it is still in place but resting horizontally,
which increases the airflow. Sometimes a little bit more air makes a
huge difference in comfort.

I have an 87 P40. the ports were made by Hood but do not match nay of
their production models. I sent them the dimensions and they have
agreed to make screens for me for $30/ screen. I have not seen the
prototype yet. The woman with whom I have dealt is Marty Barnett and
her email is <marty_...@pompanette.com>
Hope this helps

Another purpose for the screens - I just sailed from La Paz to Puerto
Vallarta/La Cruz. The screens in the windows in the galley were
tipped open to let more air in. One morning I found a 6 or 7 inch
squid in the sink. During the middle of the night it flew right in
through the open screen. Glad that it wasn't one of those monster
killer Humboldt Squid that get 5 feet long and have giant fangs....

Allen,

Did you receive the port screens?  How did they work out?

Thanks,
