Looks like the boat is leaving the yard this week... then on to the rigger for a check up (keeping my fingers crossed on that) and then finally to her home slip in Sausalito.  I have an Auto Pilot picked out and will have installed in a month or so.

Next on the list are new sails.  Right now, we can afford to purchase a main and only one Genoa and want to purchase a good "all rounder" for San Francisco Bay.  We have a Harken Roller Furller on the boat so we'll be able to reef it in if the wind really gets going.  Our old boat (a Bristol 29.9) had a 95 - 100% blade on it and that was fine for the summer winds we get on the bay.  I've read that the P40's need more and can handle more sail area....  I'm thinking of going with a 120% Genoa but really would like to get input from the group before placing an order!!

Thanks,  Neil

You might want to consider a genoa with the special foam luff edge if you intend to reef the jib.  Normally a furler w genoa doesn't perform well when hauled.  The foam core changed the shape of the jib when hauled in part way.   I have a 120 and leave everything flying to 27kts....about 12 degrees heel.

130 on Dream Keeper with foam luff.  If it's blowing we roll it in and fly the staysail.  John

Wind Witch has 85%, !!0%, 135%,!50% and a 175 % ("drifter/cruising spinnaker). Of all these, using them in SF Bay and from Puerto Vallarta to Port Hardy, the most used (by far) is the 110%. Jocelyn Nash and several other respected sailmakers have commented that the P 40 really doesn't need more than the 85%. I agree for the summer, but earlier or later and outside the Gate, I think a bit bigger is better.

The first 4 years I had my 37', I sailed with a 85% hank on jib and so did the orig owner for 23 yrs...the reason was that the boat was beautifully balanced.  Recently, I finally got the roller furler...although somewhat relunctantly.  A sailmaker persuaded me to go with a 130%, but I was pretty sure that a 110% , ir even 100% would have been the magic all around sail as I'm not excited about sailing with sail even partially furled.

I'm quite happy with my 110% with the foam luff. I've got a 130% in
the boat's basement/garage, but have never felt like breaking it out
and will get it off the boat if I ever make it to my home waters.
Sometimes I wish I had an 85% or so to hank on, instead of rolling up
the 110%, but who wants to carry all those bags of sails while
cruising and living on the boat?
