Hello all,

We will be pulling our 1984 P40 soon for her bottom painting session. I would like to do some more in-depth inspections and maintenance while she's on the hard.

1. With this vintage Passport, how does one go about greasing the seacocks? What lube should I use? I'll bet that it's never been done, so I can imagine that things will be tight. Advice? To my knowledge, all the seacocks will open/close now, but I'm sure they all need lubricating and certainly need inspection.
2. I'm sure that there are rudder bearings and a rudder stuffing box. I'm ashamed to say that I've never looked. What's the process for inspecting the bearings and lubricating them? Again, what lube should be used?
3. Does anyone have the dimensions for the cutlass bearing on this boat? I'd love to have it in-hand before I pull her.
4. We have defunct Datamarine instruments: knot log and depth sounder. We'll need one through-hull hole for a new depth sounder, but I need to patch the other hole. I've read a lot of good info on-line about performing a through-hull hole-filling, but I wondered if anyone had a step-by-step that you used. I'd love to see it done on a Passport.

To China Doll, thanks for the cable replacement info. I'll get some measurements of the current. I've never measured it and need to do so.

Regards,

Bill Ennis

Regarding your question #4, I am not sure you need a new hole for a new
depth sounder. I used the old hole for a new depth sounder last year but I
did have to carefully grind the hole to make the diameter slightly larger to
accommodate the new instrument.

Bill,

You should be able to use the old hole.  If your going smaller which NavCom utilizes a smaller hole, you can do so.  Put tape on the bottom of the hole after removal of the old unit.  Filled with epoxy filler thickened with microballs.  Then fiberglassed on both sides.  Then re-drilled a smaller hole.  Then your done.
Brief but hope this helps. If you need a bigger hole then that is easier, just enlarge existing to fit new sender.

John.

With respect to the Datamarines-refurbishing is a option, unless you're sold on new stuff. I had my wind instrument refurbished by Datamarine and upgraded to NMEA a few years ago and I'm quite pleased. I can now interface with the autopilot. For me the issue was retaining analogs in the same pods. Don't recall the cost, but I'm a cheap guy.

Bob, I love the analog Datamarine knotmeter/log &depth sounder, now 26+
years along and still working. I didn't know about refurbishing or that
Datamarine was still in business. Do you have particulars? Many thanks,
