Long post. Looking for help advice on 4.108 loading, overheating at higher rpm, and not achieving 80% of wide open throttle or 3200 rpm, and black smoke. And in advance Bill a new Yanmar is not the solution! See below and thanks for you thoughts!!
I'm looking to find out what other p42 owners are running for props with the Perkins 4.108. We have the 3 blade 16" Right Hand 11 pitch fixed, driven by a Hurth HWB 100 2R 2:1 ratio transmission. The Perkins is rated at 55 bhp at 4k rpm. Max torque at 2200 rpm. I hear that I should be able to bet 80% of 4000 rpm in fwd gear or 3200 rpm. I operate at 2350 to 2450 rpm without overheating. I get wide open throttle of ~2600rpm. However at 2500 to 2600 rpm I go above 190 on the temp gauge. Also I get substantial black smoke at rpm of 2400+. Even running at 2350 to 2450 it does not overheat (temp 172) but generates enough smoke and residue that I have to scrub the hull from the exhaust exit aft. At an rpm of 2550 or above with some head seas she will overheat going above 200f when the bell goes off. More info; thermostat 190 per spec, heat exchanger refreshed, strainer clean, exit water flow good, all new engine and water heater hoses, thru hull has been replaced, heat exchanger boiled out, a 12 gal hot water heater, (this absorbs a lot of heat until it reaches temp), new last year impeller on raw water pump, eng circ pump replaced last year, exhaust elbow replaced with Pearson style 4.108 system. This. onsists of a Perkins flange to the heat exchanger, 2" black iron pipe, 2" black iron elbow, yanmar 2" exhaust elbow, then to the exhaust muffler. This is a proven solution for the Perkins 4.108 on the Pearson's among others. This has been in place for 5-7 plus years and engine runs per above before and after the exhaust elbow change, the Perkins swan elbow is no longer made.
It seems to me that the engine is overloaded causing the black smoke and overheating. I'm considering moving down "1 in pitch. The Pyi guy at the boat show indicated I would go up 300-400 rpm per 1" of pitch change. Your prop size dia and pitch, cruise rpm, speed, eng temp., and wide open throttle in gear would be very helpful. Much appreciated. Lets hear the thinking out there.
