Water heater

My original water heater is malfunctioning. It was made in Tiwan
(Chinese writing). It may be fixable but will require some
engineering. The advantage to this is it fits and has a stainless
steal core. The disadvantage is it does not have an adjustable
thermostat and has a flakey pressure relief valve. The square
replacements that will fit without much work all seem to have aluminum
tanks. What have ther people done?

I replaced mine with a garden-variety Seaward tank, slightly smaller
than the original one. Straightforward to fit into the same space and
plumb into engine fresh water cooling and house pressure water systems.
Works fine. I think Isotherm is the top-of-the-line brand name.

The previous owner of Toloa installed an 11 gallon Isotemp (cylindrical)
under the forward settee. Required a little trimming of the wood frame to
fit it in...

I installed one of the square ones too that fit right in the same spot and
could have used the same plumbing and straps if they had been good. It has
an aluminum tank so I installed a galvanic isolator. Besides the company
saying it wouldn't honor the guarantee without one, I think it's a good
idea. My zincs seem to last a little longer.

I have a Schaefer 3 line rope clutch that was probably originally installed on my P 40. 

I think the model (from rigrite) is Sch 71-63X.

One of the clutches is missing a spring so won’t reliably bite down on my main halyard.  I’d rather not replace the whole block of rope clutches (could cost $400+ if I do with same clutch…so I don’t have to mess with new bolt holes). 

Looking for info on one or both:

1.        Better website/store to look for a surplus/used rope clutch to replace the Sch 71-63x.  I'll contact Minney's in Orange County, CA

2.       Let me know what the spring size/characteristics would be.  I can’t find a tech manual for the Schaefer 71-63x.  I can guess and order several sizes that I think are close..but would love to know the actual spring size if anyone has already been through this drill. Springs avail at:  http://www.mcmaster.com/#torsion-springs/=gjt4ic which show the different characteristics/specs that describe a torsion spring.

3.       Does anyone have a Sch 71-63x to sell?

What condition are your old Shafer rope clutches in? Mine are starting to slip. One (main halyard clutch) is chewing up my halyard line. Debating on replacing all or just rebuilding with old parts. Have you found new ones to match old mounting hole pattern?

Best to replace.

I ended up first making an adapter plate, and then finally just drilling and tapping new holes in the steel plate cast in under the clutch pad.

New=good.
