I have shipped Cayenne, a Passport 40, repeatedly from Hawaii to
Oakland or Long Beach, the latter requiring a freeway trip of
several hundred miles.
While your trip is clearly a land one (probably), the following
points may apply:
1. You need a trailer. These can be rented. I work with a freight
forwarder named Kevin Jones (Kevco, info below) who handles
everything. Another company who comes well-recommended but I have
not used is Dudley Trucking in your neck of the woods.
2. You will obviously want to prepare the boat for shipping. Mast
down, dodger off, STRIP THE CANVAS OFF. Tape a soda can to each end
of the mast. If it's crushed, your mast got bonked.
3. Buy eight tie-down straps at Home Depot. Say goodbye to them,
the truckers will keep them. You are looking for the wide yellow
ones that say "DOT" Write your boat's name on them so they will
know who they stole them from.
4. Go below. Secure everything. The boat will get rattled and
jiggled around a lot. So loose things will scratch and chafe. If
you stored spars or stuff below, wrap it up good.
5. Prepare the mast for shipping. A boatyard can do this for
several hundred dollars. Isolate (pad) the standing rigging from
the mast so the jiggling does not scratch it up. Remove your
antenna and stuff (see bonk note above)
6. The Passport 40 should ship on Interstate highways just fine,
but is "wide" and so will need a trailing "wide load" car. I doubt
they will let you volunteer for that. This could be costly. It may
be more cost-effective to ship by water (with the boat prepared for
trailer, it can go as ro-ro (roll on/roll off). Good question for
Kevin, who knows the boat.
I have used Matson for water shipping. Pasha is good too. I do not
know who serves your desired port. You might end up, if shipping by
water, going from Seattle or Vancouver BC to Florida or the
Bahamas. Oh no! What a nightmare.
Shipping from Oahu to SF costs me about $17-20k
