[Passport] 1984 Passport 42 pilothouse cutter & light air

hi,
i just recently purchased a 1984 passport 42 in the san fransisco bay
area. it is the pilot house version and according to the owner was a
factory option, but the only pilothouse ever built. so my first
question for the group is whether this is true? i am moving the boat
to san diiego at the end of the month and would like to know how the
42's sail in the low winds of southern california. the boat is
currently set up for the 25knot+ winds of the bay area, and we were
lucky in that the test sail was in 10-12k like the san diego norm, so
it appears it will move decently in these winds. as that has been our
only chance to sail it i am still curious of its performance from
someone who has been saling one regularly, and any recomendations.

I just brought my 42 to SF from the Chesapeake -- also a light wind
area compared to SF -- and I was quite pleased with how my P42 sailed.
(But sure, I was even happier when it was blowing 35k ;-)

One day in light airs (say 10k or so) I passed a Beneteau 40. I was
flying a 135 with my full batten roached main. The B40 had a similar
headsail and in-mast main. Even though neither of us were trying very
hard, I expected to get trounced. So there, a complete, robust,
scientific proof: P42's blow the doors off B40's. Enjoy.

BTW, I saw your (new) boat at the Berkeley Marina. I wish I had to
chance to check it out. There are only a few things that are on my
"must have" for my next boat, and one is a proper fully enclosed
dodger (say like a Little Harbor, or many of the Dashew boats).

thats good news, looks like a full roach main may be in my future. yes
the boat was in berkeley, and i finally got it down to san diego last
month. so herein lies my status report on the performance of these
boats.
the boat was picked up by my delivery captain in berkely and brought
down to oceanside. was motorsailed all the way down averaging 10-12
knots of wind with the wind and current pushing south from the stern.
they averaged 7.5 knots all the way down, and the delivery crew was
very pleased with its performance in seas. i picked the boat up at
oceanside on a friday evening. the next morning around 0900 took the
wife and kids and set sail for sandiego. winds fluctuated between 5-12
knots and as i wanted to get to my slip before dark i motorsailed
halfway and sailed halfway when the winds were up. sails were still
set for sanfransisco bay with a yankee up forward, a staysail, and
the main. i averaged 7.3 knots while under sail alone, and it appeared
to keep well above half the wind speed to about 3/4s the wind speed. i
was more concerned for my course, not the angle of the wind so i was
not sailing the best course according to the wind. arrived at the
marina guest dock in san diego around 1600. following morning replaced
the yankee with the 130 genoa (bought new by previous owner 2000 and
never used) wind picked up to 15 knots-----had to go test out new
sail. not nessesarily trying hard and more just enjoying the day we
set courses with the wind and made 8.3 knots on speed wheel, varified
by gps. this was only flying the genoa and the main, we didnt even set
the staysail. was grinning from ear to ear.

since then on the few weekends we have been able to take her out in
10-12 knots of wind we do right around 7.5-8 knots consistently. while
not nessesarily the best for light winds she holds her own quite well,
and as soon as the wind picks up even a little past 12 we are passing
everything in our wake. last weekend however we went out and stars and
stripes was out sailing with a group it passed us with out even a
thought lol but was a cool sight in the few seconds we were next to
her
