Subject: RUSH and other great thing coming
Hi Rushees - usually I resist sending out announcements about
concerts, etc, since there are so many of them around here.  But
there are four events coming up that are so noteworthy that I just
can't help it.  The first is Annie Patterson's concert on the 23rd.
Everybody at the last RUSH met Annie and understands what an
energetic and wonderful musician she is, even if she was "just"
leading songs at RUSH.  If you see and hear Annie in a concert of
her own you will appreciate her even more, and here is your chance.
See the Short and Long stories below.

The second concert which is coming up before our next RUSH is the
Spring Concert of the Amandla Chorus, in Greenfield, on May 31, and
this is special because this chorus sings songs of peace, justice,
and freedom, and warms my heart whenever I hear them.  There is a
tiny picture of their very wonderful and inspiring director, Evaline
MacDougall, on the flyer for this concert, which you can see by
clicking on http://www.westernmassafsc.org/calendar/amandla531.htm

And then on Saturday June 6th the Song and Story Swap, held the first
Saturday of every month in Amherst, has a very special event - Tony
Barrand and John Roberts!  John Roberts and Tony Barrand have been
described by "Sing Out!" magazine as
the "New World's foremost practitioners of traditional British folk songs."
Since teaming up as grad students at Cornell University four decades ago,
British-born Roberts and Barrand have delighted and enlightened audiences
with their renditions of sea chanteys, music hall songs, and centuries-old
ballads. Read all about it below, after the Annie Patterson part.

And of course here is your reminder for our RUSH on Sunday June 7 in
Florence!  FOUR great events coming up.

And, mark up your calendars for the July sing, at Joy and John's place in
Lake Pleasant, on Saturday July 11th.  These folks actually remodeled
their home and removed a wall, so that they could host RUSH.  Now
THAT's devotion!

Roger

ANNIE PATTERSON
in concert atthe Echo Lake Concert Series
Saturday, May 23, 7:30 p.m.

Short Story:

Annie Patterson, solo performer, song leader, jazz vocalist and
co-creator of
"Rise Up Singing", will perform at the Echo Lake Concert Series,  9
Montague Rd., Leverett, MA, on Saturday, May 23, 7:30 p.m. Admission
at the door: $8-$10. Info: 413-548-9394.

Long Story:

Annie Patterson has performed and led music retreats at folk
festivals, coffee houses, schools and camps throughout North
America, New Zealandand the British Isles.  She is probably best
known for co-creating, along with her husband, Peter Blood, the
popular songbook, Rise Up Singing.  During the last 2 decades, Annie
has honed her skills as a solo folk performer, song leader as well
as jazz vocalist.   Annie's passion for roots-based music became
especially clear when she discovered a love for the old-timey banjo
as a college student in Pittsburghin the late '70's.  After college
Annie moved back to Philadelphiawhere she hosted a folk music radio
program on the University of Pennsylvania's radio station, WXPN (the
home of The World Café).  Working as a waitress at the well-loved
folk club, The Main Point, also opened her eyes to the rich and
diverse world of folk music.  These early experiences helped shape
Annie's musical journey.  Artists like Emmy Lou Harris, June Tabor,
Dan Hicks and Doc Watson have all influenced her musical style.
According to Annie, singing with each other is a birthright; a
valuable inheritance that we are in danger of losing.  “The powerful
love and closeness that I felt when my family sang together when I
was a child has had a profound effect on me.  My hope is for others
to feel a connection with that energy when I perform”.

Annie's two folk recordings, Meet Me by the Moonlight and Deep
Roots, contain traditional and original folk and gospel music.  She
accompanies herself on the acoustic guitar, and the old-timey banjo.
More information about Annie can be found on her website
http://www.quakersong.org. (To learn more about Annie's jazz
recordings visit http://www.girlsfrommars.com.)

verve, wit, and scholar's knowledge of the body of British folk music.

They draw upon a variety of instrumentation. John Roberts excels at both

player, while Tony is a skilled percussionist on drums, bones, and spoons.

Dear Roger,
Thanks for the many great and inclusive emails to me/us. Keeping the
music alive and vital.
I will miss the Amandla  concert (I sang with Evaline et al for 8
blessed years!) as I will be on musical retreat with friends of an
acapella persuasion (the Harmony Ho's) but look forward to the other
concerts. Tony and John are great and not to be missed in any form or
venue. I remember seeing them in NOHO at Nowell Sing We Clear at
Edwards Church doing the mummers play. Outrageous! And then in
Vermont at the Champlain Folk Festival (John now in a wheelchair) a
wonderful folk fest (CVFest.org) Janet and I go to every year the
first weekend in August, camping in a local state park, jamming with
other folkies.
The RUSH get together on June 7 is where? And Joy and John's sing at
Lake Pleasant? I'd love to come to those if possible. Thanks,

For peace and social justice and love of harmony,
Your friend,
Ken
