Hey PEAR! Happy Almost Halloween!
Great meeting last night! We did so much in the past two weeks! Food
Day was great! Thanks so much to everyone who helped out! (check the
PEAR facebook page for Food Day pictures!) We bounced around some
really great ideas from AASHE. We're going to try to get EcoReps in
the dorms, take back the tap, and way more! Keep up the energy guys!
The GMO discussion was a wonderful bunch of perspectives. And there
were some really great film screenings! Bidder 70 and Farmageddon were
awesome.
Next week we'll be doing some new working groups! Think about what you
might like to do! Some possibilites: Energy Month, Environmental
Justice, Food, Holiday Craft Fair, Take Back the Tap!
The President's Sustainability Fund is looking for project proposals!
You know all those thoughts, big and small, that you have about cool
projects that you'd like to see on campus? This is totally the way to
make those a reality! We'll be working on some ideas at the meeting
next week. So people can get their brain juices flowing, throw some
ideas on this google doc!
Announcements:
On Saturday, November 3rd, Cal Earth, a nonprofit that builds low-
cost, environmentally sustainable structures (like superadobe) is
having an open house! It should be way fun and free if you bring some
food to share at the potluck! If you're interested, email Emily Hill
at em.thea...@gmail.com. It looks like a really awesome event!
Wednesday, November 7th at 7 in Rose Hills: Sustainable Claremont, the
EA Department, Cal Poly Pomona's Food Justice Club, and more are
screening American Meat: Our Meat is Changing... For the Good! This is
an awesome new documentary about current revolutions in animal
husbandry. The producer is on a national tour and will be taking
questions after the screening. And there will also be a panel
discussion with local farmers and scholars.
Want to go see Bill McKibben speak at UCLA on November 11th? Check
chirps for the details! The trip leaves at 4:30 and gets back at 10.
Sorry for the lack of details, but it should be so great!
Friday at 12 in the Hampton Room above Scripps' dining hall, Julie
Guthman, will be giving a talk called "Changing the world one meal at
a time, or having our cake and eating it too? Reflections on the
origins and character of the alternative food movement." She's
amazing! (For those of you who know Nate Wilairat, she is one of his
most favorite people!)
On Wednesday, the 5c sustainability coalition will be having a Trick
or Vote! We'll be meeting at CMC at 8 by the glass cube to get set and
then go door-to-door to get people excited about voting and have the
discussions about environmental issues that have been sorely lacking
from the discussion. Sign up at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiqcA4nc2S-wdGtoZ2RkUDZn...
Tuesday lunch in Frank and Wednesday lunch at Frary, the SIO is
raising awareness about vampire energy usage with Energy Vampires!
There will be candy, power strips, and general joviality! More Info
about the event here!
Not sure why that last bit decided to be orange. But soldiering on!
Please submit designs for a PEAR T-Shirt! It can be anything your
heart desires! And then we'll have awesome T-Shirts! And you'll get a
free one!
Have a great week guys! Happy Halloween!
Love, RJCP
