Living Rhythms
by Padmapani L. Perez
FILIPINOS have long been used to Western-style music, but traditional
beats and rhythms continue to thrive in communities across the
country. In the summer capital of Baguio City, for instance, the age-
old melodies of the Cordillera peoples remain alive and well -- and
very much a part of modern life.
The latest piece in i Report's Himig Pinoy series looks at the
experiences of three young Cordillerans who now live in the city but
keep close ties to their villages through "traditional" music. In
fact, they have even become proud proponents of Cordilleran music,
which they not only perform but also teach others to play. In an age
where music is often treated as a commodity, these young men are
instead using it to honor their ancestors and to ensure that
generations to come will enjoy this valuable legacy.
We hope the piece will bring readers a brief respite from the
political din of the last several months.

Music and the Machine
by Paolo Santos
UNLIKE recent Senate witness Leo San Miguel, Paolo Santos is no
technical expert -- at least not to his adoring public. After all,
Santos gained popularity as one of the proponents of the so-called
"acoustic sound" in the country. But as it turns out, Santos knows
more than a thing or two about using technology to enhance music, and
he has not been shy about putting that knowledge to work.
In the latest piece in i Report's Himig Pinoy series, Mr. Acoustic
revels over the technological advances that have helped him be "more
efficient," which in turn has left him with more time to create just
the right kind of sound he likes sharing with others. He also points
out," The purity of music will always be there, the moment someone
hums a tune, when I wake up in the morning and start playing my
guitar. Yet I have no qualms about embracing technology for all the
possibilities it offers me and my music."

SPRATLYS DEAL
Selling out Philippine sovereignty?
by Alecks P. Pabico
IF the tripartite agreement entered into by the Philippines with China
and Vietnam to conduct a joint marine seismic undertaking (JSMU) in
the disputed territories of the Spratly Islands is currently mired in
