Below is Lucy's response to my inquiry about re-running the share the road column for February, forwarded to you with her permission. I completely understand her reasons for saying no to the column re-run. Her point about "t-shirts", however, leads me to a third wild idea I've had.
Dave Zabriskie has founded Yield to Life, a non-profit organization to deal with exactly the types of issues we've been discussing (
www.yieldtolife.org), and they are launching a number of education programs. (What if Mr. Zabriskie could make a swing through Oxford?.... yeah, like that would happen at this point in the year.) Anyway, they do have jerseys, t-shirts, socks, and stickers already made out. At present you can only get them if you
become a sponsor, but they've shown themselves open to suggestion before (I've already e-mailed them once), and they might be willing to just sell them if prompted since that makes money, too. I'd be willing to take point on that effort if there's interest.
Or we could come up with something on our own.
Again, wild ideas. Do with them what you will.
I have GOT to get back to grading now.

Hey, Nathan,
I'm not really in favor of
re-running things like this so soon -- and while I believe in the power of the newspaper, there may be some more-effective ways of promoting driver awareness.
Just off the top of my head, maybe your group could volunteer to give a talk to the drivers' ed classes? Civic groups are also always looking for speakers if a few in your group like to talk.
What about making some T-shirts with "Share the Road" real big on the back and wearing them when you ride around town?
You guys can also always write letters to the editor if there's a specific problem you want to point out -- that's an easy thing to do and the editorial page is well-read.
Let me know what you think,
Lucy

Lucy,
One of our club members is working on the next article for Oxford Cycling, but I have another idea I'd like you to consider. There's been a lot of chatter on the listserv in the last few days about the need for more and better driver education. The column that I wrote for
February covered most of the important points for drivers to think about when it comes to sharing the road. Seeing that May is officially bike month in Oxford, what do you think of re-running that column at some point this month? We would still send in the other column, but re-running the Feb. article would be a way of boosting awareness. What do you think?
