Bearing in mind that I have no idea what it would take to make either one of these happen, and that neither has any direct bearing on what we can do for Bike Month, I offer the following for consideration:

1.  What about setting up a bike skills/bike maintenance/helmet fitting/rules of the road stand during next year's Double Decker, in addition to the ride?  On the Square would be great (cost prohibitive?), or at least on the children's end of the festival.

2. The same idea, but during home football games this fall.  We could do something like our event last fall where several of us biked in and set up the banner, only make it last until game time.  There are lots of bikes, lots of kids, and lots of traffic, so people might be thinking about the intersection of all of these anyway.

I realize riding space in both of these is restricted, but, as I said, these are crazy ideas.  If there's consensus that they're usable, we can work out particulars later.  Submitted only as brainstorming.

This is not such a crazy idea, and may not have to be restricted to
DD. There is talk around town (and Im sorry to be vague, but I dont
have the full details just yet) of a kind of environmentally friendly/
local fair that is in the making that will involve how to become more
environmentally friendly, such as recycling, perhaps a light bulb
exchange bla bla bla, how to compost, how to grow you own veggies, why
you should shop locally etc, and I think that cycling and cyclist
awareness fits right in to this idea. I will get further details of
this fair...

Good ideas,

At the DD I picked up an application for the 4th of July Parade.
Link here (JPG Image file): http://home.olemiss.edu/~ccronk/Parade%20registration%202008.jpg

The theme this year is green.  Awards for most environmentally friendly float/group.

Also we want to stage a ceremony for the BFC award.
I think it would be great to have a bike-fair as Nathan describes, and maybe a 5-mile around-town ride with police escorts. These will be topics of discussion at the next Pathways Commission Meeting Mon May 19.

Will the Bicycle League of America allow us to use their "bronze medal"
graphic on our websites? tee-shirts? jerseys? lapel pins?

The graphic I'm talking about can be seen here:

http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/communities/bfc_oxford.php

And, while you're there, click on the "map of BFC communities" link;
from there you click on a state and then you can read community
profiles. There are lots of great ideas for education, encouragement
and the other 5 E's.

Our BFC designation really is a big deal and we need to promote it!

Bronze Medal: Its already here: http://www.loupathways.org/
and here:  http://www.loupathways.org/bfcaward

I would say put it on whatever you want, I can't imagine that they would complain - if they do we will apologize.

Oxford's profile: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/communities/bfc_oxford.php

Reads as follows:
Community Highlights:
On the heels of a 2003 comprehensive bicycle plan, Oxford has implemented 5 miles of bike lanes, 7 miles of signed bike routes and 7 miles of rail trail conversion. The Double Decker Spring Ride is one of the most well known and well attended cycling events in the region.

Half of the city's elementary schools take part in Safe Routes to School programs and local advocates have a monthly column in the town newspaper to address bicycling issues including how to share the road. With Oxford Convention and Visitor's Bureau sponsorship of a cycling team, a BMX track and additional multi-use path trails being planned, Oxford is leading the way for other Mississippi communities.

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment:
Oxford recently secured $3.6 million in funding for many cycling related improvements including a rail trail conversion, Safe Routes to School programming and transportation enhancements to include bike/pedestrian accommodations.

I had Jason look for some pictures for the profile, if anyone has photos that better represent the  profile above - we can send 3.

See Auburn's profile for example:
