Hi all,

Open City has been hosting a weekly open gov hack night for the past couple of months. It's on Tuesdays, and we recently starting meeting at 1871. The idea is to provide a space for people to work on open gov projects.

Non-coders are very welcome. We need people who know city / local government, and there's lots to be done that isn't code.

---

Come join a group of passionate folks working at the intersection of open government, cities, and technology. This will be an evening of civic tech hacking.

This an event for those who want to:

  • get work done on open gov projects
  • start a new project, or find one to join
  • bounce ideas and get help from tech and domain experts
  • learn about open gov, smart cities, and open data

NOTE: This event is switching to Tuesdays going forward. We're now meeting in the open classroom at 1871. (It's down the first hallway.)

There will be food. A $5 donation is much appreciated.

OpenGov Colleagues -

I'm organizing a new nonprofit social enterprise, The CivicLab (http://www.civiclab.us) that will be a store front space for educators and activists to meet, do research, teach and build tools for civic engagement. Think 1871 but focused on social and community change. Attached please find a one-page summary.

We are having a design hack on Saturday, June 16 from 10am to 2pm (pizza lunch provided) at The Read/Write Library where we will be (1) Reviewing trends in maker spaces, hearing from James Carlson, the foudner of Milwaukee's BucketWorks and the School Factory, (2) Reviewing the life-cycle of an activist event and seeing where technology and social media might accelerate or optimize steps along the way, (3) Inquire as to what exactly is required for "civic literacy," and (4) Sketch a number of possible floor plans and cartoon drafts of what the Lab might look like.

Sound tasty? We need hactivists, coders, data demons and designers to help us build tools and apps for civic engagement. Please let me know if you'd like more information or would like to attend the June 16 design hack.

Thanks!

Tom
