PhilaPOSH Office 5th Floor of AFSCME DC 33 3001 Walnut St - Agenda:
May Day Speakers - Rally/March - Music/Entertainment - Kids
"Stuff"/Entertainment. Since May Day 2008, the "May Day USA Education
Committee" has worked to organize an annual Philadelphia May Day
observance and celebration at Elmwood Park (71st and Buist Ave,
Southwest Philly).  This site was selected because the surrounding
neighborhood had a vision and leadership that organized and worked
hard over many years to create the city's (and the Nation's!) first
and only Park dedicated to the Labor Movement.  "The Labor Monument:
Philadelphia's Tribute to The American Worker" was completed and
dedicated to the city in the fall of 2010.  Since Philadelphia Labor
has this great venue - something to be very proud of - we're seeking
your valued input and participation in planning a May Day 2013

Moran <Jimmoran2...@comcast.net> Thank You.

Occupy Philly will be sponsoring a livestream viewing party of the
Strike Debt telethon, to launch The Rolling Jubilee, a campaign that
buys debt for pennies on the dollar and does away with it. Instead of
collecting the debt, we will abolish it and help free the debtors!
http://www.facebook.com/events/394920527248194/ For years, all kinds
of communities have been facing down a debt crisis that has stretched
their resources thin and made them especially vulnerable to sudden
shocks. 76% of Americans households are in serious debt, and 15% are
being pursued by a debt collector. Though the banks got bailed out,
the people are still waiting for their turn. It’s time for us to step
up. It’s time for a People’s Bailout. On November 15th, Strike Debt is
holding a telethon & variety show, featuring some remarkable artists,
including Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic
Youth, Guy Picciotto of Fugazi, Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio,
plus some special surprise guests. Most of all, it features, you, the
people. This event will support the Rolling Jubilee, an ingenious way
to buy debt for pennies on the dollar, and abolish it. The Rolling
Jubilee is designed to scale up, but it need donations to do so. Each
dollar of contributions goes a long way -- $5 can abolish $100 of
debt. For $50,000, we can eliminate around a million dollars of debt.
Think of that: Together we abolish $1 million of debt, and that’s just
the start. The event will be streamed live at www.rollingjubilee.org -

Thursday, November 15th 7:30pm - Prison Divestment Campaign Comes to
Philly: Dump the Prison Stock, Invest in Humanity - Arch St UMC - 55 N
Broad St - Are you concerned about anti-immigrant policies, mass
incarceration and the growth of the private for-profit prison and
immigrant detention center industry? Do you want to know what you can
do to put a stop to companies that waste billions of tax payer dollars
and profit from incarceration, deportation and tearing communities
(and families) apart? Come out for a talk and discussion with Amanda
Garcés of the National Prison Divestment Campaign and learn how to get
involved in ending the private prison and immigrant detention center
industry. This talk will also feature the launch of the "MISSING"
project, a collaboration between Decarcerate PA and the National
Prison Divestment Campaign. “MISSING” is a visibility project which
utilizes public art by creating life size silhouettes to be placed on
walls, used as signs, props, etc. to raise awareness of those who have
been stolen from our communities by the criminal justice system.
Private prison companies, like GEO group (which built George W. Hill
prison in Delaware County and currently operate Moshannon Valley
Correctional Center in Phillipsburg, PA) rely on financing and other
assistance from major investors, such as Wells Fargo, to employ
powerful lobbying efforts in Congress, Federal agencies and state
capitols across the country. These lobbying efforts result in laws
that increase the rate of deportation and mass incarceration thereby
generating profits for themselves while costing tax payers billions of
dollars. But we can stop these companies, stem the tide of mass
incarceration and deportation and invest in communities, restorative
justice and education. The National Prison Divestment Campaign is a
growing national movement that is pressuring financial institutions,
large companies, municipalities and pension funds to divest from the
private prison industry. Come out and learn how you can get involved.

Friday, November 16th, 7pm - Don't Clean Up This Blood - Wooden Shoe
Books - 704 South St - On July 20th 2001, in the city of Genoa, Italy,
the corpse of a 23 year old man, Carlo Giuliani, lies on the pavement.
Carlo was shot for protesting the G8, where representatives of the 8
most powerful countries meet to plan the world economy, together with
200.000 other people. The next day the streets of Genoa are flooded
with nearly 500.000 protesters. The response of the police is brutal
and unprecedented in Europe, with mass beatings and almost 400 people
arrested. The police repressive action culminates with a night raid at
the Diaz, a school that had been transformed in dormitory and media
center. Officers in full riot gear enter a building full of sleeping
people from all over the world and, when they leave, the rooms are
covered in blood. 93 people were arrested, dozens hospitalized, 2 of
them in coma and one with irreversible brain damage. Those detained
are abused and tortured for days, denied any contact with lawyers and
family and no medical assistance, despite their serious injuries. 10
years later the Italian court of appeal decides to charge some of
those arrested with 15 years of jail for conspiracy against the state.
While Italy is mobilizing, here in the States we are facing the
threats of the NDAA, in the grip of a global strategy that aims at
creating a space of suspension of our basic rights, in order to deal
with our dissent. Join us on Friday, November 16th at the Wooden Shoe
at 7pm, for the screening of “Don't Clean up this Blood”, a fictional
documentary that retells that story following the thread of
testimonies and court recordings. After the movie there will be an
open discussion. - https://www.facebook.com/events/278462525608299/
