Members and friends of the Oklahoma Conservative Political Action
Committee (OCPAC)
We meet every Wednesday, 12 noon at Chen's Buffet, 23rd and North
Meridian in OKC. Several months ago we set out to create an OCPAC
speakers bureau. Bob Donohoo is providing the leadership in that
effort and will do a power point presentation called, AMERICAN FOREIGN
POLICY-REGARDING WAR. We eventually hope to have 8 to 10 different
presentations. In addition to Bob's presentation, I will give a
summary of OCPAC's accomplishments for 2007 as well as relate some of
our goals for 2008.
As mentioned in the most recent e-mail, I would discuss the
presidential candidate I am supporting now that Tom Tancredo has
dropped out of the race. I believe endorsements have only minimal
impact and most especially an endorsement from me. What I really want
to do is express some of the thought processes I have gone through in
trying to deciding who to support in the Republican primary.
From the beginning I have believed that for the good of America and
the remaining elements of conservatism within the Republican party,
those not already driven away by George W. Bush, that Rudy Giuliani
must be prevented from getting the nomination. If the choice is
between Rudy and any Democrat, any differences will probably be
limited to the war, but not on foreign policy or much of anything
else. I also believe John McCain must not receive the nomination. He
should be honored for his military service, however his service as a
Senator has been ideologically inconsistent. I don't care for
inconsistency as it is likened to a person patting a conservative on
the back half of the time and stabbing that same person in the back
the other half of the time.
Duncan Hunter is very similar to Tancredo, just not as conservative
through out his career, though he is saying the right things at this
time. By ignoring Hunter and giving 10 times the attention to their
favored picks, the liberal main stream media has relegated Hunter to a
second tier candidate. It also appears, much like Tancredo, he lacks
the ability to rise to a contender on his own.
I considered Romney, but believe he is too much of a political
opportunist, able to change his positions, according to the time,
place and audience. His largest contributions come those associated
with international corporations. If elected I believe most things will
be the same old same old. American policy for the benefit of big
business rather than for the benefit of America.
I looked at Thompson, but am concerned about his membership in the
Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), his proclamations in favor of free
trade and NAFTA as well as the incompetent job he did as Chairman of
the Senate Committee responsible for investigating the fund raising
dollars for military secrets between Bill Clinton and the Communist
Chinese. I believe in FAIR trade, if properly defined, but not free
trade. The free traders are selling out the sovereignty and national
identity, of the U.S. as well as causing the de-industrialization of
our nation. They are also putting at risk our future food production
and processing capabilities.
Therefore, that leaves me with 2 candidates, Mike Huckabee and Ron
Paul. Both of these fellows were second tier, now these candidates
have earned their way to national attention. Huckabee with his
charisma and Paul with his fund raising and the most energized and
dedicated grass roots supporters of any candidate in the race.
Though I received information over 2 years ago from members of the
Arkansas Republican Assembly that Huckabee wasn't a conservative, I
wanted to see for myself. I looked close at Huckabee and really
appreciate his aggressive support of The Fair Tax. The more I studied
him the more I realized how brilliant he is and what great
communication skills he possesses.
His rise to the top has been as a result of his political instincts,
personal charisma and the ability to connect with the American people
on an emotional level. His political instincts allow enable him to
think very quickly on his feet. And when he gets in a tight jam, he
always comes up with a plausible answer to the majority. He has
communication skills much like Ronald Reagan or Bill Clinton. Of
course the latter never cared much about the truth as he continually
lied to the American public.
I wanted to like him, but the more I examined him the more I have come
to distrust him. His performance while Governor of Arkansas was a
mixed bag. Reliable on the abortion issue, yet on the other hand he
was an advocate of big government especially in the realm of
education. Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly said, Huckabee
"destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the
Republican party in shambles." This past week Judical Watch proclaimed
Huckabee as one of the 10 most corrupt politicians in America.
Huckabee was dead wrong on the illegal alien issue and though he has
tried to moderate in recent weeks, as Tancredo said, he can't be
trusted on the issue. I could be wrong, but I believe he is very
similar to George W. Bush, with the one exception that he is a
communicator. I actually believe he may be the most electable
Republican in November, but do we want another George Bush in office?
I sure don't. There are going to be a lot of very good people who
support Huckabee and I can understand the reason. He is a very good
politician, he may be the definition of slick.
That leaves Ron Paul. However, he is not just my pick because of the
process of elimination. I voted for him in 1988 and have always
thought Congressman Paul to be the finest in Washington out of the 435
in the House. However, we are talking about moving him from 1 out of
435 to a position of one third of our government.
Normally I would have been on his band wagon from the beginning, but I
had, and still have, one very serious concern with Dr. Paul. My
concern is that he underestimates the threat to our nation from the
radical elements of Islam. I actually agree with many aspects of his
foreign policy stances and wish we could start with his ideas about 80
to100 years ago. Many of his ideas are rooted in George Washington's
farewell address.
However, today we are deeply entangled in the affairs of well over 100
nations. I believe it will be very difficult to steer a right path to
extricate ourselves from the majority of those involvements. I believe
an over extension of our resources and the many long term entangling
involvements may be as great a risk to our future as those we oppose
through these many involvements.
Besides our risks from without, which I believe are primarily Russia,
Communist China and Islam, we also face risks from within. Today our
society is seriously divided. We have many who are un-patriotic. They
see America as morally inferior to other nations and are thus America
haters. Some are globalists, socialists, fascists, central planners,
irresponsible big spenders, and of course, through unfettered illegal
immigration, we now have many amongst us who only care about accessing
our prosperity. They care little or nothing about becoming a patriotic
American citizen.
I am totally convinced Ron Paul is the very best person we could elect
to the office of President to lead in a different way. Can you imagine
a president who actually honored his oath of office to uphold the
Constitution? I am willing to take a chance on foreign policy to have
a man who will BATTLE the threats from within. After all, when it
comes to foreign policy, all any of us can do is speculate as to what
would happen if we change course. Though Congressman Paul is not a
great communicator, he comes across as genuine and his whole life has
been about consistency. When it comes to domestic policy, Ron Paul
would be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.
While I believe it will be very difficult for him to win the
Republican nomination, I think there is some chance he could win in
November. All of the Democrat candidates have indicated they will not
promise to withdraw our troops by 2012. If elected, either Congress
will declare war or Ron Paul will pull our troops out by the end of
2009. Can we bring about our objectives by that time? Nobody really
knows. However, the commitment to pull our troops out will be very
appealing to the many single issue Democrats. Won't they be shocked if
liberals support him for his position on the war and then when
elected, he begins to disassemble their precious welfare state?
These are simply my opinions and not that of OCPAC. Many will disagree
with my opinions and that will be fine. After this is all over with,
all but one candidate will have come and gone but the issues will
still be in our face. That is when we all need to come together to
work on the issues through whomever is elected to the many offices in
our land.
Again, everyone's memberships will expire on December 31. Please
consider renewing your memberships for 2008. OCPAC has earned a
reputation of being effective as well as consistent in its primary
goals of electing conservative people to the state legislature, trying
to hold them accountable for their conservative rhetoric and acting as
a support resource for those in office.
I look forward to seeing everyone this Wednesday.
