Please spread the word about a new public high school opportunity that is opening up for our community.
Jones College Prep High School (near State and Harrison) is one of Chicago's best public high schools. Today it is a selective enrollment program - meaning that students from all over Chicago may apply to attend, and admission is based on grades, standard tests and an admission exam. Current enrollment at Jones is about 900 students.
In the 2013-2014 school year, Jones will move into a new, larger building, with capacity for 1200 students. The additional capacity will be used for a new admissions pathway. This will be a career preparation program offering engineering and law options. Students in the new program will take one class in their career program each term, and the rest of their classes will be the same college-prep program that Jones has offered in the past. (Students who are not in the career program may also take the career prep classes as electives.)
Admission to the new program is a selective process based on grades and test scores - with first preference for applicants who live within an overlay boundary area. The proposed overlay boundary runs from Ashland to the lake, and from Grand Avenue to 26th Street or Archer. Jones will be accepting 75 freshman each year through this program - so this represents a significant number of additional high quality high school places available to residents of the downtown area.
Applications for fall 2013 entering freshmen will be accepted until January 15, 2013. Copies of materials that CPS and Jones have provided at a recent community meeting (including a map of the proposed neighborhood preference boundary) are available on the New Eastside website at http://www.neweastside.org/JONES.html
