Hello,

In an effort to move the naming of the group forward, albeit with slightly less urgency than previously, some of us met last week to come up with a selection of names to choose from for the liverpool hackspace. The list is below, so if anybody has a preference, or better yet even more ideas/suggestions then they would be welcome and appreciated.

1, Office of Odd Objects
2, Solid State Scouse
3, Lab Scouse
4, Softlab
5, Insitute of Interesting Things
6, Make 201
7, Dept/Ministry of Interesting Things
8, Gears, Sparks and Spells
9, Institute of Mechanical, Electronic and Magical Engineering

Hopefully we'll have a little more information about the organisational structure later this afternoon, so will post the options and a call for participation then.

Ross.

I like the X of Interesting Things names, with a slight preference
towards ... Well I can't decide, probably Ministry because the acronym
MoIT is close to MIT ;o)

As a second, Solid State Scouse, and the recursive Odd Object Department too.

I like the Ministry of Interesting Things, or how about Cool Stuff,
Inc.? I remember we discussed the possibility of a CSI Liverpool... :)

Ministry of Interesting Things was a popular one but I believe there's some American outfit that might try to take credit for some of the cool stuff we'll be doing.

I can't believe Ross missed off the best contender which was "RASoftLab", has to be said with a particularly strong scouse accent.

A quick Google search for "Ministry of Interesting Things" gets only
one result, and without quotes nothing that looks like it would cause
a problem?

you cant abbreviate it easily though, as MoIT (mow-it? moyt? mow-eye-tee?) is difficult to pronounce, and MIT is taken!

I'd imagine in conversation you'd refer to it as "The Ministry", or
perhaps Mini-I-T (Mini-Eye-Tee) In the same way Ministry of Peace gets
reduce to minipax.

How about simply, The Pool? It doesn't have to stand for anything
(although the l could be for Liverpool), and has positive
connotations.

Or maybe something in keeping with other local organisations such as
Metal, Static, Red Wire, and Future Station. OK, these are arty
organisations but the same principle applies. Something like
Transistor, Fluxgate, or Probe.

I thought That Tech Thing might be cool, but possibly a little too alliterative.

I reckon the best thing to do is to make a note of all these names, and we can have a paper vote of those proposed (top 2 preferences for each person) on the 19th at the Maker Night - let me know if you want a postal vote.

Ross.

One thing we didn't manage to do at last night's (otherwise rather successful) Maker Night was choose a name for the group.  So given that there's still a window for suggestions, I thought I'd throw a few into the mix :-)

Hardware Port - playing on the dual meanings of "port"

Thinking about how magic is a good metaphor for explaining some of the hacked objects behave, it makes them almost "enchanted objects", so...
Merseyside Enchanted Objects Workshop - for all the cat-lovers
Ministry of Enchanted Objects
Liverpool Enchanted Object Factory

Playing on the old Mersey Docks & Harbour Board, the Mersey Code & Circuit Board

And to give us a slightly better acronym for the MInistry of Interesting Things, how about the Workshop/Warehouse Of Interesting Things

Adrian.
