Subject: Sub/Urban Justice Summer '09

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to pass on a message from Elena Swartz, a past Environmental
Club leader!

This summer I'm working as a staff member with Sub/Urban Justice Summer,

> a program that brings together youth from Boston and the Boston-area suburbs
> to talk about social justice issues and we have open applications that we
> would like to extend an invitation to apply, particularly to freshmen and
> sophomores for the program this summer!

Here is our official blurb:

Sub/Urban Justice's flagship program is Sub/Urban Justice Summer, a six week

> social justice education program for Greater Boston high school students.
> SJS brings together a diverse group of students from communities such as
> Newton, Brookline, Jamaica Plain, Needham and Cambridge to learn about
> social justice issues (examples include racism, classism, sexism, the
> environment, housing, education, etc.), connect with existing social justice
> groups and create community-based organizing projects. Past SJS participants
> include NNHS alums David Kates ('07), Allie Kayhart ('08) and Elena Swartz
> ('07 - she will also be on staff this summer.)

This past school year we've been doing programming with young people in

> Needham, JP and in a coalition of private schools. Currently we're in the
> process of recruiting for SJS '09, and one of the target communities is
> Newton. We've been asking teachers and other community leaders to identify
> young people who they think would be a good fit for our program. This means
> specifically asking 4 or 5 students to check out the program and fill out an
> application, if interested. This summer we're trying to get as many freshman
> and sophomores in the program, so if you're in contact with either of those
> age groups, that would be great.

Teachers at North who know about the program are: Mr. Cho, Ms. Leong,
