Frank, Wow--I am curious--why did you do this?

I am not a big moleskine mod fan--one of the reasons I use the
moleskine is that it has everything that I need--but I do have a lot
of friends who create strange Duct Tape Pen Holders or GTD Tab
Systems--so I *generally* understand what drives the customizations
that I see.

This however is something else. The image itself is uniquely creepy,
having been taken on an embrodered pillow case or something--it just
looks ancient and alien and horribly out of place--the David Lynch of
Pocket Notebooks--even the standard band stands out like a sore
thumb.

I appreciate the post, but really--what were you thinking? Are you
going to use this or did you just have some Shark Skin laying around
the house? Thanks, David S

Hi David,
thank you for y   email. Didi you   ever  questionned  about  an at work why the peinter  or  musician have done it??
Its a creation  job. Even  if the  image is uniquely crepy, or  horibly out of  place ??? as you say.
I havent  use  any  shark skin lying  around my  house .. I bought  them  and used it . Of course  you are  absolutly  free  not to like my   work , as i do   for  exemple  for some  modern art but i respect the  artist whom done it.
regards

Traditionally this would be considered a skill that is part of the
making of the sword of a Samurai where the wrap on the handle is most
often based in sharkskin. It is extremely durable and provides
outstanding grip. I make knives (not swords!) and have seen some
excellent work in sharkskin in that arena.

This is one of those skills which admirably combines beauty with
function - thereby elevating the "everyday" to the status of "art."
This approach to functionality was an integral part of all ancient
cultures - something almost completely missing in our own culture.
For examples go to the wonderfully embellished work of Native
Americans in making everyday articles like footwear, sheaths or
clothing. To recover this approach to the "everyday" is to combine
craftsmanship, art, durability and function - perfect!

It seems to me that this approach, when applied to a Moleskine
notebook, is appropriate. In fact, this modification resonates well,
I believe, with how many of us see Moleskine - elevating the mundane
(a simple notebook) to something more artful and pleasing.

May there be more art and craftsmanship in our daily lives!

Cheers,
Mike

Dear Mike  ,
Thank you  for  this  nice analysis .
What can i  add to  this is  i am  godan IAIDO  teacher  and my  genuin katanas   have  shark  skin  on the  Saya which is also covered by URUSHI ( japaneese laquer)
Art in martial  art  or art in Writing instruments  like Namiki  pen or  Moleskine  is for me same  approche.
best regards

Frank,

> Didi you ever questionned about an at work why the peinter or musician have done it??
yes.

routinely.

Often the best way for me to learn to do just about anything is to ask
the creator "what were you thinking?" because often they explain
technical challenges that I may not have even imagined. Of course,
sometimes they see my questions as insults...

> Its a creation job.
Yes, but it is a "creation job" that exists in a context of other
creation jobs, right? I mean we have a huge collection of Moleskine
mods--from the simple "Stamp Your Name On The Back" to the more
complex "build a case to hold everything you need to get it
done"--some of these are very artfully done while others are generic
hacks. In terms of "cover design" mods, most of these seem to fall
into the PeeChee Folder category--designs that express the personality
of the user.

I found your Mod unusual--I did not see the purpose of the Mod (I
admit to knowing nothing about Japanese Sword manufacturing techniques
or materials)--and questioned why you did it (see above). I did not
mean to offend (that much)--I did mean to stress my response to the
the strangeness; the strangeness not only of the material used and the
image, but also the conflict with the overall aesthetic of the
Moleskine--the simplicity of the band conflicting with the strangeness
of the skin texture.

I am sorry if I have offended, I did not mean to criticize. Of
course, if your goal was to make some kind of artistic statement you
have succeeded admirably.

> Even if the image is uniquely crepy, or horibly out of place ??? as you say.

Can you imagine if Modo e Modo used this image in an ad?

> I havent use any shark skin lying around my house .. I bought them
> and used it .

Where does one buy Shark Skin? How much does it cost? I just googled
it quickly and could not find any for sale... Of course, I will never
cease to be amazed with what is available...

> Of course you are absolutly free not to like my work , as i do for exemple for some modern art but i respect the artist whom
> done it.

Again, I did not mean that much disrespect--some gentle ribbing--but I
do not mean to stifle your artistic expression. Seriously, I do not
see any "harm" in what your doing (like it would matter if I did!);
however, I am still unclear if you are planning to use this mod?

Most of the time I see a mod I am curious and ask about the thinking
that went into the mod--how the person uses their Moleskine, if they
are happy with the modification, etc--if I were in a meeting and a
contractor pulled out a Shark Skin Moleskine I have no idea how I
would respond, but I do not think I would ask a lot of questions...

My first thought when I saw this was, "Isn't shark skin delicate?".
What do I know? It looks as though a lot of work went into this. I
like it. Especially the way the band and skin bare touch each other.

I don't think it's very out of place. Modo y Modo is shipping a
patent leather moleskine. While really nice, I don't see the point,
except the higher price one....

That said, they are nicely done, too and would make a nice gift.
