  Hi, &lt;br&gt; When I was an udergrad at cal I took both classes. I took 53 first. &lt;br&gt; Assuming 53 has not changed much from when I took it... I think that &lt;br&gt; 54 is better to take first, because it gives a nice gentle &lt;br&gt; introduction to mathematical reasoning, where as 53, the way it was &lt;br&gt; taught when I took it, mathematical reasoning was taken as obvious.

  If he&#39;s just taken Math1B or any other calculus course, I&#39;d suggest he &lt;br&gt; continue to take Math 53 before he forgets everything. Otherwise, it &lt;br&gt; really doesn&#39;t matter if he takes 54 before 53. The material&#39;s &lt;br&gt; completely different from each other.

  I think taking Math 54 before 53 is not a bad thing because &lt;br&gt; the two courses do not act like prereq&#39;s to each other.

  I agree with the above students. Where I saw a concept or two that &lt;br&gt; translated from 53, the same could be said the other way around I think. I &lt;br&gt; know a bunch of people who took both at the same time.

  i would know only the proofs! &lt;br&gt; jk &lt;br&gt; just practice doing fourier series and heat eqn problems, maybe some &lt;br&gt; boundary and solving systems and yr a-ok
