I've used both blue and red kote on chickens. I didn't realize that there is a non-aerosol version. I've found the aerosol to work just fine.

Catch your birds at night when they are on roost, cover their eyes with rubber gloved fingers (disposables available at Farm and Fleet), and spray their heads heavily so you do not have to repeat it soon.

The stuff doesn't come out of clothing well, but it wears off your skin within about 3 days.

I expected the red kote to be an attractant to pecking due to its color, but once the aggressors taste that red stuff, they stop pecking. Great for poopy chick butts.

Thanks for the help! What I learned was that F&F on 51 doesn't carry it (or nobody knows where it is which is just as likely at that place) so I'll check Verona. Also, Murray McMurray charges 3X more, here's a much more reasonable price for mail orders http://www.pbsanimalhealth.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/wound/blukote.html?E+scstore

What is this blu kote stuff?  Is is organic?  I put that triple antibiotic ointment on mine.  It worked, but I guess it's not organic?  Susan

the only person I talk to at the F&F on 51 is Phyllis in the farm department. That lady knows that department like the back of her hand and is great!!!!!   A couple of the other people should take the time to get to know the department they are working in.

the blue is from blue gentian (hence the staining)  but i don't know what else is in it...it's gotta be better than have a naked, red, chicken head though.

I don't know from Blue Kote, but do have some chicken-keeping advice to add.  Beware the wily windblown styro, the lurking packing peanut peril.  Here is an excerpt from an essay I am writing on the subject:  .  Once a neighbor’s styro packing peanuts escaped into our yard and though I toiled to find them all before the chickens did, one hen spied, speared, and swallowed before I could stop her.  I am sure they looked a lot like grubs.  Sure enough, that night on the baby monitor I kept in their coop (I told you it was a Potemkin farm) we heard a distressing wretching sound.  My husband, who had been  dragooned into this business to begin with, bless his heart, seized the hemostat, grabbed the hen’s goozle, and performed a styroechtomy within seconds.  She survived, but is probably no wiser and would run, flat-footed to grab another faux grub if she could find one.

Years ago I got a fungal infection in my ears.  How I don't know, but nothing would get rid of it.  Some of the medications brought me to my knees in pain.  I then had to go to the hospital everyday so they could vacuum out my ears.  Anyway, they finally tried the old remedy of gentian violet.  It worked.  Dr. got some on his pants, however.  haha.  Susan

At the FF on 51, check in the horse section by meds/wormers,etc.- that is where we have always found it. Bright yellow aerosol w/ blue cap. Just about any horse supply store would probably have it as well. It's a wonderful general antiseptic and we use it on hot spots, minor scrapes, etc on our dogs.Learned of it from other dog people. The only difficulty w/ it is a dog will foam at the mouth if they lick the treated spot.......but no, it didn't make the dog stop licking! Blue tongue, blue fir and a blue spot on the kitchen floor that eventually faded :)

My mother wiped out on her bike when i was a kid in the 60's, same thing, fungal infection nothing would get rid of and gentian violet did the trick.  it was taken of the market as a human medication in the early 70's.  I know it works on ringworm on animals too...  good stuff.

Yes, I was in so much pain.  Skin doesn't stretch well inside the ear.

i did find blu-kote at f&f on 51, just don't ask anyone there. it's with cattle supplies. just over 5 bucks.

Hmm. They used to carry it. It should be with the cattle medicine. Perhaps they stopped, which would be unfortunate. But then, as you found, things are usually cheaper online.
