PPC Mac Mini users: I am aware that Apple specifically says not to
use an older O/S that whatever came loaded when it was manufactured.
We have a client who's requesting that we put Panther on their PPC
Mini and will sign a waiver accepting responsibility for if it hoses
the machine, which is out of warranty already so they are willing to
risk it.
Anyone had success trying Panther on a PPC Mac Mini? Any advice if
you did --- any problems.... suggestions..... comments etc. ?
Cecile, FWIW, the first couple of PPC Mac Mini's came with Panther (OS 10.3.7) pre-installed on them. Only the rare 1.5 gig G4 came with Tiger pre-loaded. Hope this helps.

Exactly which Mini is it?
The early ppc Mini models require OS X 10.3.7 or newer.
1) What could OS X possibly do to a machine that would "hose" it?
2) The minimum OS X requirement is about *hardware support*, not about "accepting responsibility". The older OS simply doesn't have the necessary drivers for the newer hardware!

If you have one of the earlier models, then Panther (10.3.7 or newer) will run fine.
Gotta ask - WHY? Why do they want to strap a brick on such a nice Mac's forehead? Tiger and Leopard run so much better than Panther. And app support for Panther is pretty much dying these days.

Any programs written for Panther will run just as well on Tiger would they not. Panther did not have automator. And applescript did not change. Do they just dig the default wallpaper? On Jun 24, 2008, at 12:25 PM, Dan wrote:

No, that is not accurate, any programs written for Panther do not run just as well on Tier - many do, some don't.
It nothing to do with the wallpaper - it is because they had a fairly expensive custom app developed for their internal SARBOX tracking which requires 10.3.9 and crashes consistently on newer versions of the OS
I did mention all the other reasons not to go "backwards" in OS rev
We're going ahead with the wipe 'n re-install this weekend
Thanks to all for your replies and suggestions....

When I tried it I had no sound. I want sound, just not the start up sound.

The earliest Mac Minis came with 10.3.
The next two came with 10.4, and could not have 10.3 installed on it.
The way to install 10.3 on any PPC Mac Mini is to boot it into Firewire Target Mode, and then to use a machine which _can_ have 10.3 installed on it to install 10.3 onto the hard drive of the Mini, as the target drive of the 10.3 install process.
A B&W G3 or any of the G4 towers is a good choice.
My first Mini was a 10.3 one, but it could run 10.4, of course.
My second and third were 10.4-only ones, but because of my applications suites, I had to use 10.3 on them, and that is the way I did it ... Firewire target mode, and a G3 or G4 tower for the install process.
Oh, after you complete the install, boot the Mini into 10.3, and then run Software Update enough times to get current, which could be about five times if your Mini has Airport Extreme.
The first updates will bring (basic) Airport up to scratch, and then the next couple of updates will add Airport Extreme and then, finally, update Airport Extreme to the most current.
Just figure on running Software Update again and again, until it finds nothing else to update.
My Mini (G4, 1.25 Mhz) came with Panther loaded when I bought it, and
my supplier gave me a Tiger update disc. I ran it with Panther for
several weeks before I got around to upgrading to Tiger, so I don't
see why this would be a problem for your client.

Has anyone seen the new Dell machine that is smaller than the mini? Maybe Apple should give us an update of the hardware as well as a larger computer that would fill part of the rather large gap between the mini and the Pro.
