We have several openings at present in the Data Mining and Machine
Learning Group, National University of Ireland, Galway.

1. Two postdoctoral research positions, each of up to two years'
duration, working on our ongoing research project, The Galway Lab for
Biomedical Data Mining , which is funded by the European Union's Marie
Curie Programme for Transfer of Knowledge.
2. One PhD studentship, of three years' duration, working on a new
interdisciplinary, collaborative project entitled Handling
Nonlinearity and Uncertainty in Drug Delivery Modelling, which is
funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
3. One software engineering contract, of one year's duration, working
on a new project entitled Comparison, Search and Clustering of
Spectral Data , which is funded by Enterprise Ireland.

1: Postdoctoral researchers in Biomedical Informatics

This is part of an interdisciplinary research project entitled the
Galway Lab for Biomedical Data Mining, in which we are collaborating
with several medical research groups in Galway, as well as Prof.
Padhraic Smyth of the University of California, Irvine, and his
collaborators in the US-based Biomedical Informatics Research Network
(http://www.nbirn.net/research/function/); and Prof. Stuart Russell of
the University of California, Berkeley, and his collaborators in the
Center for Biomedical Informatics in Critical Care (http://
www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Projects/Data/102178.html). Applicants
must have a PhD the area of machine learning, data mining and/or
statistics, with research experience in biomedical applications, time-
series analysis, or other relevant applications. Excellent
communications skills are required. A strong publication record is
expected and substantial experience of programming & software
development is preferred.

2: PhD studentship: Handling Nonlinearity and Uncertainty in Drug
Delivery Modelling

In an ICU ward, computer systems constantly monitor and record data
such as changes in heart rate and blood pressure. This project will
develop software techniques that uses this data, and will add new
mathematics and computing techniques that infer patient response to
certain drugs in real-time, to predict the impact on the patient of
different drug regimes. This will allow for drug treatments to be
tailored to the individual. This contrasts with the current practice
of basing treatments on standardised data, taken from clinical trials
using healthy volunteers, who might not respond in the same way as
sick patients.

This is a strongly interdisciplinary collaborative project, involving
Informatics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, with an application
in Medical Informatics. The project collaborators include researchers
in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics in NUI Galway, the Intensive
Care Unit at University Hospital Galway, as well as Prof. Stuart
Russell’s group in Computer Science in the University of California at
Berkeley.

3: Software engineering contract position: Comparison, Search and
Clustering of Spectral Data

We have previously completed research in which we developed new
machine learning methods for analysis of chemical spectra were
developed, in particular for the analysis of mixtures of materials
based on their chemical spectra. In this project we are extending the
work to other tasks of relevance to analysis of spectral data:
imperfect matching; clustering of data; and fast but accurate search
against a database of spectra.

The software developer will be to develop sophisticated new algorithms
for clustering, matching and search, and with high-quality, carefully-
tested implementations in Java. This will include design, analysis,
implementation, testing, evaluation and documentation. Candidates must
have at least four years’ relevant experience of developing commercial-
quality applications in Java, and a proven ability to deliver complex
products on time. Candidates should have a good honours degree in an
appropriate discipline, along with research-level experience in
machine learning, signal processing or statistics (preferably a PhD or
MSc by research in one of these areas).
