Hi Wendy,
MassDOT is doing traffic counts as part of the project. It appears that people are using I-93 and other designated detour routes, as we expected.
Hope everyone is well - Happy Thanksgiving!
Luisa

Subject: A good moment to count traffic on the Charles River bridges

Hello All -
We have been interested to observe the effects of closing inbound traffic on the Craigie Bridge, especially in light of the anticipations of horrific traffic jams everywhere. For example, in our non-scientific observations of traffic on the Longfellow Bridge in evening peak hours, it does not appear the diversions from the Craigie Bridge have had much of an effect. If anything, traffic on the Longfellow seems to move better now that the inbound Craigie is closed.

This is obviously counter-intuitive. We would suggest that the state mobilize its considerable forces and count the traffic on the Charles River Bridges now that the Craigie inbound lanes are closed. The traffic is diverting to other routes, but not apparently to the Longfellow Bridge. Perhaps traffic is changing mode??

There may be insufficient time to mobilize for counting at this moment. But consider that the Craigie Bridge will be under construction in stages between now and April. Surely there would be an appropriate moment in the next 5-6 months to do comprehensive counts of the bridges over the river.

MassDOT members of the Google Group - could you please let us all know what you think of taking some counts of what is happening out there during the closures?
Thank you!
Wendy
